FrontierVille Gingerbread House Goals: Everything you need to know

Gingerbread House WhackingYou pioneers are never satisfied, are you? First, it's the Buildable Snowman. Then Zynga gives you 12 days of Christmas Goals. And now, because that clearly wasn't enough, it threw in one of the most elaborate cross promotions you've ever seen this side of Rattlesnake Canyon: The Gingerbread House. Man, you FrontierVille players are just plain spoiled.

It seems that this adorable little gingerbread man is having trouble building his home this Christmas season as everywhere he's gone, people have literally eaten him out of house and home. In order to help, you'll need to go back to the three locales he's tried to build at and retrieve the essential ingredients to his home: CityVille, Treasure Isle and Mafia Wars. After placing his house on the homestead and giving it a few good whacks (that cost Food this time rather than Wood, get it?), you'll be greeted by this Building's menu. (If you're having trouble finding him, he's hanging out with the Carolers near the Toy Factory.)

Find out how to complete this Goal spanning several Zynga games after the break.
Finish your Gingerbread House
We'll get the easy--well, easier--stuff out of the way first. In addition to traveling to three different game worlds, you will need 15 Pretzels, 10 Gingerbread Slabs and 10 Frosting Tubes. All three of these items are acquired the old fashioned way: begging, of course. So, keep up on tapping your friends for these Gifts while you gallivant about three games.

Paul's Improvements
Let's start with finding a Chocolate Bar in CityVille. Clicking on the "Earn for Free" button will take you to a confirmation screen that will then launch you into your own city. From there, click on the Horseshoe icon to get started with "Paul's Improvements." Here, you'll need to do three simple tasks: place two Asphalt Roads, collect from five Residences and place three Decorations (yawn). Find the Asphalt Roads in the Decorations tab of the Build menu for 10 coins a pop. Also in that same tab will be where you can find three Decorations, so pick any three and put them any old place. Then, just click on five Residences with the coin icon hovering above them. If you're trying to save money or don't have any room for this nonsense, just delete it when your done using the Remove tool. For doing this, you'll receive 50 coins.

For some reason, completing the Goal won't return you to FrontierVille automatically nor did it instantly reward me with the Chocolate Bar. Only after jumping back into FrontierVille and following the same link that go me into CityVille from the game in the first place made Paul reappear, allowing me to jump back into FrontierVille to claim my Chocolate Bar. Next, let's take a stroll down the shady streets of Mafia Wars to get the next item, the Candy Cane.

Mafia Wars Candy Cane
Following the same process again, but for Mafia Wars, will take you where you need to be for the Candy Cane. For new or low level Mafia Wars players, this is going to be cake. For the veterans out there, have fun, OK? All you need to do in Mafia Wars to get the Candy Cane is gain one level above Level 5 through Jobs, which won't be so easy for the Level 100-plus players out there. Once you level up, you should receive a similar message to that from CityVille, prompting you to return to FrontierVille and open up your Candy Cane. Next, let's dive into Treasure Isle for the final item, the Gum Drops.

Treasure Isle Gum Drops
This Goal should be even easier than the last for most. For players above Level 4 (it's a requirement), all you need to do is find five Treasures... anywhere. So, you could probably just go about your business and work on whatever it is your currently tackling. Then, you should receive a similar confirmation as before, transporting you back to the homestead with Gum Drops in hand. If this doesn't happen automatically--this goes for Mafia Wars too--try the trick mentioned above. It worked in CityVille, so it might work the same way here. Now that you know what to do, go forth and conquer the worlds of what might soon be the misfit Zynga games, cowering in the shadow of the mighty CityVille empire.

Mafia Wars 'No Crime Like the Present': Everything you need to know

If you took a look at your Operations today in Mafia Wars, you might have noticed a massive Christmas Tree plopped where your normal group missions should be. Do not be alarmed, this is Zynga's new, elaborate holiday event to ring in Christmas mobster-style, "No Crime Like the Present." In this special, limited time event, players will have to get into the holiday spirit like any self-respecting mafia member would: hoarding and stealing, of course. Mixing a little bit of gifting, stealing and protection, this event is going to take plenty dedication and team work if you want to nab the grand prize weapon: Auld Lang Syne (110 Attack, 135 Defense).

Peek behind the break to get a detailed look at how this huge holiday event works.
Holiday Gifting
Before you do much of anything involving Presents, we recommend getting your tree to the max level as soon as possible for it to hold the maximum amount of Presents: 45. (This becomes vitally important later, trust us.) To make your tree shine brilliantly at Level 5, you will need to collect large amounts of each Decoration: Ornaments, Lights and Candy Canes:

Level 2: Three of each Decoration (increases capacity to nine)
Level 3: Four of each Decoration (increases capacity to 18)
Level 4: Six of each Decoration (increases capacity to 30)
Level 5: Eight of each Decoration (increases capacity to 45)

That's a total of 21 for each Decoration, which adds up to a grand total of 63 gifted items.Thankfully, you can send these Decorations to your mafia members through the Free Gifts page as well as request them, making the task slightly less tedious. However, what you can send from that page is a Holiday Sack, which may contain one of seven items: any one of the three Decorations, any one of the three Presents or a Lump of Coal. If the person you're sending the Holiday Sack too has already maxed out their Christmas Tree, then that narrows down the possibilities to one of three Presents or the Lump of Coal (a weapon with one Attack and one Defense). After you've decked out the tree with blinding holiday bling, it's time to pilfer those Presents.

Rewards List
This is done exactly how decorating the tree was, but you can send Presents directly from the Christmas Tree menu. When sending or receiving a Gift, you have a random chance at getting or giving either a Blue, Red or Green Gift. This directly effects your chances at winning the 11 available items, most of which have impressive stats, thankfully. While there are five common items that can be found inside any of the three varieties of Presents with lesser stats, there are six items that can only be inside one of the three Presents with numbers that match some Italy-grade items. Here's where you can find the rarer holiday items:

Blue Gift: Shadow Transporter (77 Attack, 60 Defense); Bengal Tiger (72 Attack, 99 Defense)
Green Gift: Mobile Garage (55 Attack, 79 Defense); 40mm Bunker Buster (101 Attack, 68 Defense)
Red Gift: Achilles Salvation (69 Attack, 100 Defense); ET Hybrid (63 Attack, 75 Defense)

However, we don't recommend opening these Presents before New Year's Day. If you can't wait long enough and have the maximum amount of Presents come Jan. 1, you'll receive the grand prize. Unfortunately, that won't be so easy considering anyone can steal Presents from any Christmas Tree. Luckily for you, six friends can be enlisted to protect your Presents with their statistics contributing yours. So, make sure you recruit only your most powerful friends to keep your tree safe.

Tree Robbery
If you want to steal your own Presents, Christmas Trees will randomly appear on the Robbery Page with varying difficulty based on the mobsters protecting it, but you'll always need at least five mafia members and six Stamina to rob one. Also, Zynga added a News Feed to this Operation's home page so you can track who did what to your Presents and retaliate accordingly. With the threat of your precious Presents being stolen, we know where you're going to be this Christmas.

FrontierVille 12 Days of Christmas Goals: Everything you need to know for Day Nine

On the Ninth Day O' Christmas
By now, you're probably overwhelmed with holiday-themed things to do in FrontierVille, but you must press on. And we're here to help. Today, Zynga unlocked "On the Ninth Day O' Christmas" in the 12 Days of Christmas series of Goals. Once again, seasoned players will have little to no trouble with this Goal (although it can quickly become time consuming), but players who are relatively new to the game have quite a lot of work do.

First things first, you're going to need a completed Schoolhouse to complete this task, so why don't you new players check out this detailed guide (courtesy of FrontierVille Wiki) on how to complete it and come on back when you're ready? Once that's through, you'll need to collect the Daily Bonus from the Schoolhouse twice. So, this Goal is obviously going to take at least two days--just take your time. Next, you have to find a Lunchbox. Conveniently enough, they happen to be part of the Schoolhouse Collection, so you might come across one while collecting those two Daily Bonuses, but it is random. All the while, you will need to ask your friends for 10 Book Reports, which will be used up in the Goal. Fulfill all three requirements and this Goal will be in the bag faster than that torn-up wrapping paper Christmas morning with 90 XP and 900 coins waiting for you.

FrontierVille Gingerbread Man Goals: Everything you need to know

Check out the rest of our Holiday 2010 coverage right here.

If you thought you were done with the scrumptious-looking Gingerbread House in FrontierVille, think again. As it turns out, the Gingerbread Man's stay on the homestead is part of a series of three Goals starting with "Building the Gingerbread Man a Home." And if you followed our guide on how to build it, you've already got the hardest part of this Goal out of the way.

As for the other two requirements, you've been asked to plant five Fruit Trees. This means that you can plant five fruit-bearing trees of any kind to fulfill this portion of the Goal. So, if you're living on the cheap, just go with five Cherry Trees. That will only cost you a total of 3,100 coins and will be ready harvest in the least amount of time, which leads us to the final requirement. All you need to do is harvest or water 20 fruit trees on your homestead. If you don't have 20 trees already, this will take some extra cash and time, but for those with bigger homesteads this should be easy pickings. Enjoy the 150 XP, 250 coins and Light Snack as a reward for your hard work.

Find out how to best complete Part II and III of the Gingerbread Man Goals after the break.

Eaten Gingerbread HousePart II of the Gingerbread Man Goals requires the unthinkable (and, if the forums are any indication, annoying): you must eat the Gingerbread House. I guess your pioneer, after witnessing its sweet, cavity-inducing glory, decided that they just could not resist. Well, that's my suspension of disbelief, anyway. And to go with that delicious Gingerbread House, you'll need two Milk from the Cow Collection and 15 Cloth (napkins... get it?). As always, Cloth comes from visiting friends, but if you don't have any Milk saved you'll have to try your luck at finding it at random from tending Cows. Once this is completed, 200 XP, 500 coins and 75 Food await you.

Brace yourselves, Part III is somewhat of a doozie. You're going to have to rebuild that Gingerbread House you just gorged. Let that sink in a little bit before we move on. You're good? Great. Now, this means that you'll need to do the same three cross-game Goals again and ask for the same three items from friends, according to several forum members whose posts have since been removed. But that's not all. In addition to rebuilding the little guy's crib, you will also have to harvest any crop 150 times and harvest 50 of your friends' fruit trees. While you don't have to harvest the same 150 crops, you're probably better off just picking one crop and sticking to it like the Clovers or Tomatoes, the cheapest, fastest crops in the game. Either way, this Goal is going to be time consuming for most, to say the least. You're reward for getting there and back again will be 450 XP, 2,500 coins and a Mini Gingerbread House. Now that you know what to do, go on and make that Gingerbread Man one happy cookie.

Civilization World for Facebook reveals a crazy complex city [Video]

CivWorld Combat
You wanted complexity in your Facebook games, right? Firaxis Games plans to deliver enough of it to keep you interested for, well, ever in Civilization World. (And probably more than we could handle.) In Episode 2 of CivWorld's Gameplay Walkthrough, Pete Murray shows the nitty gritty of each of the game's primary resources: Food, Gold, Science, Culture and Production. And Sid Meier's social rendition of his hit strategy game looks to be deeper and more daunting than ever.

In CivWorld, you can change your workers' tasks at any time to fill gaps in any particular resource. Have some Farmers producing Food, but you need more culture progression? Then just switch them over and they'll start gathering the Culture resource. Scientific progression can be automated using the Job system, but can be micromanaged as well. The most exciting aspect of city progression in CivWorld, however, is the mini games.

For each resource, there is a mini game that you can play for extra boosts to that stat. For more science points and faster progression, you can work on a vast, sprawling maze mini game. To increase your Culture, you must collaborate with your friends to complete artifacts and acquire Great People before the opposition does, which can be sped along through a picture-swap game.

Most intriguing of all is the first footage of the combat system we recently heard about, which amounts to a card battle game that uses your Civilization's collective units. So, it pays to--you guessed it--collaborate. If anything, CivWorld is looking to be a seriously deep game, and we can't wait to dive in.

Plants vs. Zombies, unite! PopCap's charity auction enters Week 2

While most sites right now are abuzz with the rumored auctioning of PopCap Games to Electronic Arts ("Auction item number one: PopCap ... the whole thing! Bidding starts at ... $1 billion!"), there's a smaller, equally important one started by PopCap itself.

To recap on PopCap, for every week until July 12th, the company will put a bunch of official, one-of-a-kind games merchandise up on eBay to bidders. All proceeds (the first week's raised $1,700 USD) will benefit the Starlight Children's Foundation in America and SpecialEffect in the United Kingdom.

Since Bejeweled, Plants vs. Zombies is the most well-known and beloved of PopCap's games, so it's great that we're seeing a lot of PvZ merchandise this week.

Following the ceramic Peggle sake set, you can now serve up some delicious breakfast (or braaaaains) with a Plants vs. Zombies ceramic mug and bowl set! Fend off the undead hordes with an official Peashooter costume that was used in the NYC Greenwich Halloween parade! Or get a box diorama of a PvZ Final Wave to display in your home.
Plants vs. Zombies ceramic mug bowl set
This week's auction closes June 28th with more goods on the way. (I'm excited to see what the Zuma-themed ceramic tea set will look like!) Keep up with the releases here: www.ebay.com/popcap.

Marc Ecko's Weeds Facebook game (puffs then) passes this month

Marc Ecko has rolled up a new joint on Facebook--figuratively, of course. Weeds, the hit show on Showtime revolving around a pot-dealing suburban soccer mom, will have its very own marijuana-making Facebook game this month.

Ecko's game studio, Ecko Code, built the game in association with Lionsgate Films to coincide with the show's season premiere June 27. And you can probably already guess what you'll be up to in Weeds Social Club (its official title).

Admittedly, much of the game sounds like the Canadian Facebook ganja-grower Pot Farm. Players will have to grow and create their own strains of marijuana, and tend to the "crops" much like they would in the far more innocent FarmVille.

As you level up in the game, you will unlock advanced strains of the potent plant to sell above or below street value. With the cash, players can deck out their houses with tons of digital goodies, and buy even more with Favors, the game's paid currency.
Weeds Social Club
The game's not all about growing the fire grass, at least. Andy Botwin from the show is featured in the game, and he's been blessed with the voice and wit of Justin Kirk (who plays Andy in Weeds) to give you tips as you progress. More importantly, Weeds Social Club will follow the plot of the show closely, and perhaps even try out new, alternative plot lines.

This social tie-in is decidedly more mature than most, and Marc Ecko frankly doesn't care. "There has been this philosophy of don't offend anyone, be very broad-this Hallmark card philosophy," Marc Ecko told Business Week. "We believe there is a user out there that wants something with more teeth and more counter culture." Well, you can't get more "counter culture" than this--unless, of course, someone went and made a Breaking Bad Facebook game.

PC shooter Team Fortress 2 is now free, Valve's new favorite word

If you've never played Team Fortress 2--or any PC shooter, for that matter--there won't be a better time than right now. Valve, developer of critically-acclaimed franchises like Half-Life and operator of the Steam network, has made its team-based first-person shooter (FPS) free. And that's forever.

Team Fortress 2, released over Steam in 2007, tasks players to work as a team across several game modes like Capture the Flag and King of the Hill. You can choose between a bunch of different player classes such as the Sniper, the Scout, the Heavy and more.

The game will be supported by micro-transactions--just like your favorite social games. (And just like it has long before it went free-to-play.) There will be no subscriptions nor will there be advertisements. And in an interview with Develop, Valve's Robin Walker said, "Now that we're shipping it, it feels like a fairly straightforward next step along the 'Games as Services' path we've been walking down for a while now." In other words, we can likely expect way more where this came from.

TF2 logo
The developer slash digital games store owner has been on a free frenzy lately. Just last week, five free-to-play games were made available on the Steam platform including Spiral Knights, a social game-like dungeon crawler for four. (It looks like another developer is feeling the heat from the social/mobile games markets.) This could be the mysterious project Valve recently alluded to, or more freebies are just around the bend. A man can dream, no?

Zynga goes bananas for Astro Ape, potential buyout in action [Rumor]

Can we finally give Zynga an ominous title ... like the Ape Assimilator? (It just rolls off the tongue.) Business Insider reports that Zynga, most recently creator of Pioneer Trail, has purchased self-proclaimed mobile social game competitor Astro Ape, most recently known for Monsterz Revenge for iPhone. And no "anonymous sources" even needed to be cited--just look at Linkedin.

Astro Ape CEO Chieh Huang, along with a number of his colleagues, have changed their profile information to positions within Zynga NY, one of the global companies few east coast studios. Specifically, Business Insider cites Astro Ape's director of engineering, who has taken the exact same title within Zynga's New York office.

So, the website deduces that Zynga has more than likely acquired Astro Ape. And what an interesting turn of events. Just recently, Huang called out Zynga, claiming that his studio was better than the omnipresent Facebook games creator.

"It sounds like a basic concept, but I think it's getting lost a bit today in social gaming. Our users come into our apps because they want to play our games, not because we spam them with invites, requests and other offers," Huang said months ago, indirectly referring to Zynga.

Monsterz Revenge
Has Astro Ape bended its stance in the name of the mighty dollar, or does it plan to bring a new breed of mobile game to Zynga? Who knows, but if this turns out to be true, Zynga just employed a brilliant strategy, sway the naysayers.

Zynga slapped with yet another patent infringement suit over its games

Zynga is officially the proverbial guy who wins the lottery and suddenly "reunites" with hundreds of long-lost friends. Only those old friends are angry, money-hungry companies and the "reunions" have been swapped for nasty lawsuits. Zynga faces yet another patent infringement lawsuit, this time from Agincourt Gaming, seemingly the publisher of Pantheon, a greco-roman combat game on Facebook (pictured below).

Sun Herald reports that, according to allegations made by Agincourt Gaming, Zynga has violated two patents held by the company regarding credits-based online gaming since 1996. (You know, the model used by every Facebook game ever?) The company, who just recently entered the Facebook games biz, seeks monetary damages and a permanent injunction against Zynga that shut down several of its games.

More specifically, Agincourt Gaming named FarmVille, FishVille, PetVille, YoVille, Zynga Poker, Empires & Allies, Mafia Wars, Treasure Isle, FrontierVille, CityVille, Cafe World and Vampire Wars. In other words, all of Zynga's games (that matter) have been put under fire. According to Sun Herald the lawsuit also alleges that Zynga has a history of copying smaller developers' game ideas.

Pantheon on Facebook
Zynga knows the issue rather intimately, considering the company has been smacked with multiple infringement lawsuits over the past few months. Companies like Vostu, SocialApps and even The Learning Company have approached Zynga, which is said to be worth over $11.5 billion. Clearly this has become a growing trend for the global developer, but when or if Zynga will finally bite the bullet and respond to these claims is what we're all really waiting for.

Dustbin Bieber will see double in Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo for DS

And so will the little ones, we'd imagine. Mind Candy, creator of the hyper popular social game franchise Moshi Monsters, has announced Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo for the Nintendo DS. With the help of global publisher Activision, Mind Candy looks to put the adorable little creatures right in every kid's pocket this fall. (Because, seriously, what kid doesn't own a DS by now?)

The game sounds like it will expand upon the existing Moshi Monsters hook: Moshlings are pets that players collect for their pet monsters. Pet monsters with pets of their own--this is a little too meta for my taste already.

According to a release, the game will feature 52 Moshlings to collect including a brand new one that has yet tot be announced. The game will also feature new mini games that are, of course, educational, as well as trophies for players to collect.

Gallery: Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo

This is just one of the many ways Moshi Monsters will and has occupied the time of over 50 million kids worldwide since 2008 like the Moshi Monsters toys, books, trading cards and even a magazine. Being able to interact with your Moshi Monsters in new ways and in new places sounds cool and all, but we just hope Mind Candy cures our Dustbin Bieber fever while on the go. Something tells us we're not the only ones. Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo, is due out globally this fall.

Yar's Rutabaga Revenge: Atari's 'core focus' now on social, mobile games

Looks like Yar might exact his revenge on your farm next. Atari has announced three additions to its high-level staff, but more importantly, a big clue as to where the ancient company is headed next. According to a release, Atari will shift its "core focus to casual gaming experiences designed for mobile, social networks and emerging platforms."

The bolstering of the company's senior management with three new hires brings in collective experience from EA, Vivendi Games, King.com, Sprint and more. The lucky (lady and) gentlemen are Robert Mattes as CFO, Owais Farooqui as Senior VP of Digital Publishing, and Maria Pacheco as VP of Mobile.

Some might have seen this one coming, considering it will have released three Facebook games in less than a year once Dungeons & Dragons hits Facebook, but this the proverbial mission statement for the company going forward. Since December of last year, the company has released two Facebook games: Asteroids Online and most recently Fairies vs Darklings, neither of which have been particularly successful, according to AppData.

Alas, the company will press on into social games in search of its flagship Facebook game. Thankfully, it has a few ginormous properties up its sleeve like Missile Command, Centipede, Pong and Breakout. And with Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of Neverwinter (pictured) headed to Facebook this fall, the company just might have a shot. Just look, those are some of the most well-known names in gaming. Come on, just try and tell me you wouldn't play (a legit version of) Pong on your iPhone.

Ultima's Richard Garriott: Social, mobile games are the 'future of games'

We knew it was for more than the buck all along. For big league game designers and (literal) space cadets, apparently, like Richard Garriott, their leap into social games is about more than money: It's the future, Marty! During the final keynote speech of GDC Europe, the creator of Ultima commonly known as Lord British said, "I'm a devout believer that this is the current and near-term future of games." What's "this," you ask?

Social and mobile games, and Garriott is certainly not alone in his new found faith. The founder of social games studio (and technology) Portalarium has been joined by veterans like Doom co-creator John Romero and Civilization maker Sid Meier. Even Sim City creator Will Wright is said to be digging Facebook games right now. (Though, there is certainly a ton of cashola to be made in this biz.)

However, Garriott has some specific ideas for how social games will continue to operate, according to Gamasutra. Namely, he seems to think that asynchronicity is here to stay. This means that how friends interact independently of one another a' la FarmVille will be the mode for Facebook and mobile games going forward. Of course, the burgeoning freemium model will also become a norm in mobile games as it has social games, according to Garriott, who is currently working on bringing his flagship character, Lord British, to social networks in a big way.

His answer to the naysayers still sitting in the Xbox and PlayStation camps? Just you watch, these things are evolving fast. Garriott reiterated on his points made earlier in the year that Facebook gamers are already more sophisticated at navigating video games than we've assumed, and they'll be ready when the technology catches up.

"My main message to the development community is don't get left behind," Garriott said. Don't worry, milord, I reckon the dollar signs alone will eventually attract almost everyone.

FrontierVille Resolution Missions: Finish all six and score 50 free Horseshoes

Whether or not you've started on your real-life New Year's resolutions, you will also get the chance to try your hand at a series of new virtual resolutions in FrontierVille. The FrontierVille resolutions mission consists of six different 'resolutions' that you need to complete before January 31 if you want the big payoff.

What is the big payoff -- aside from being virtually healthy, weathy and wise? You will be the proud new owner a new badge, a book of experience, which can be used to level up faster and 50 Horseshoes, which is roughly the equivalent of $6. Maybe you can use the extra currency to buy a few boosts or maybe even that awesome Double Rainbow decoration you've had your eye on for months (OK, fine -- I'm talking about myself -- I can't wait to get that friggin' rainbow!). frontiervillel resolution missions

The six resolutions can each be purchased for coins (either on this resolutions screen or in the store) and each has a suggested level you should be to complete each one. The first ones start off easy and then get more progressively difficult as you go on.

If you don't have 'em already, make sure you have 50 of the following: cows, oxen goats (you'll need to sell 50 adults of each animal for the last mission, so the sooner you get started the better). 3. Buy all six missions at once, so you'll can get credit for all of your daily activities like tending animals and clearing rocks. It'll cost 32,000 coins, and it'll be worth it.

EverQuest 2 brings the addiction to Facebook with Fortune League

Fortune League
We're sure many of you have heard the "EverCrack" references before as soon as someone in the room mentions Sony Online Entertainment's (SOE) ubiquitous MMO franchise, EverQuest. It's terribly fitting that one of the most addicting games be joined with arguably the most addicting website, which is why SOE has released Fortune League on Facebook. A companion game to EverQuest 2 (EQ2) and the company's fifth Facebook game, Fortune League allows players to a earn rewards for their characters in EQ2 by recruiting a team of warriors and completing weekly quests.

"We worked closely with the SOE team to complement their popular MMO title in a unique, brand-relevant way onto the Facebook platform," CEO of Fortune League-developer Fastpoint Games Kelly Perdew says. "Fortune League aims to provide existing players with a fun, new way of engaging with the depth and adventure of EQII, in short, snackable sessions, while also introducing new players and creating a new revenue source for the franchise."

Successfully assessing quests with the correct team style and completing adventures rewards players with experience boosts, cosmetic upgrades and prizes that they can make use of in both the free-to-play and subscription varieties of EQ2. After giving Fortune League a quick test run, it's clear that this game is for EQ2 players only. Much of the game's lingo and statistics will look like another language to someone who isn't a seasoned EverQuest fan--and this is coming from an MMO-player of over 10 years. Not to mention that if you don't currently play EQ2, there won't be much benefit in playing Fortune League. If you happen to assume the role of a Froglok Paladin in another digital life, then by all means dive in and earn some rewards.

Survey says, 'One third of social gamers play several times daily'

A recent survey of two thousand social gamers and consumers conducted by UK-based Econsultancy found the usual statistics such as "one fifth of consumers have played a social game" to gender breakdowns (surprise: slightly more women play than men). However, the report, titled "Social Gaming Smart Pack," found one startling number: 30 percent of social gamers claim to play several times daily. Now, we don't know exactly how many times the word "several" means, but it sure does imply more than, say, a couple.

This means that one third of social gamers log in... let's say more than twice daily. If this statistic is truly representative of the global player base, then perhaps the rampant addiction claims and stories hold more merit than we thought. Below that are the 26 percent that admit to playing social games several times weekly, which is far more manageable for most.

Econsultancy found that one fifth of social gamers have paid to play one of these games, which is even more surprising. The typical comments you find in messages boards and even right here on the Games.com Blog suggest that this number would be far lower. Perhaps the paying players aren't too keen on bringing that up in conversation? Even if these numbers aren't on the nose, one thing is certain: social games are far from seeing their twilight years.

Play CityVille and Zynga will unlock Goji Berries in FarmVille

If you were playing FarmVille back at the time of the 7-Eleven promotion that took place last Spring / Summer, you might remember the launch of the Goji Berry, and the mad dash most users participated in to plant as much of the crop as humanly possible before it expired at the end of promotion.

However, for those users that didn't live near a 7-Eleven, or simply chose not to purchase real world items to unlock the Goji Berries in FarmVille, Zynga has decided to allow users another chance to grow Goji Berries; that is, there is a potential chance to plant them available here, but we'll have to do a little something for Zynga in exchange.

The deal is this: If 100,000 FarmVille players play CityVille within the next 72 hours, Zynga will allow Goji Berries to be planted in FarmVille for "awhile." "Awhile" is a vague statement, yes, and unfortunately, I can't make it any clearer, but the simple opportunity to grow Goji Berries is exciting, no matter how long it will last (especially if we'll at least be given a chance to master this extremely limited edition crop).

So what are you waiting for? Click on this link to head into CityVille via the FarmVille forums, and make sure you count as part of the 100,000 necessary players. We'll be sure to let you know if Zynga reaches the necessary number of players, and when Goji Berries are re-released officially (since we don't think there will be any problem getting 100,000 players into CityVille).

FarmVille Winter Wonderland Animals: 50% off Dall Sheep & Fjord Horse

Zynga has updated FarmVille this evening, and has included a big incentive with this update that might turn this weekend into a bit of a shopping spree for some players. There are two new Winter Wonderland animals to choose from, with both of these animal being premium items. However, their premium, or Farm Cash prices, are actually 50% off, meaning that if you take advantage of the sale lasting the next 7 days, you'll be able to get these animals for half of their regular price.

The two animals are the Dall Sheep and the Fjord Horse. The Dall Sheep costs 9 Farm Cash as part of the sale, and the Fjord Horse costs 13 Farm Cash. While both of those might seem like high prices, just take a second to double those amounts and think of what you might be paying otherwise, outside of this half-off sale.

Again, the prices on these animals will only be around for the next 7 days, but we're assuming that the animals themselves will stick around, albeit at their high price tag, for at least a few days after the sale has ended. We'll be sure to give you more information as we have it.

FarmVille for Dummies arrives to reeducate virtual farmers everywhere

It's strange to think that FarmViille has been around this long without its own "Dummies" book. And leave it to our good friends (and Games.com contributors) Kyle Orland and Angela Morales to make it happen. Orland, a freelance journalist, and FarmVille Freak founder Morales teamed up to create the 288-page tutorial detailing everything from the basics of digital farming to mastering the in-game Market and troubleshooting gameplay issues.

The book, both published and distributed by Wiley, is available now from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other fine book sellers for $19.99. You may say to yourself, "But I already know what to do in FarmVille," but what about your friends and family who don't? Admit it, you're just bitter because you didn't think of it first. And better yet, Orland is working on CityVille for Dummies set to release in July of this year. Hey, at least there's still FrontierVille--wait, this just in: He's got that one too! Just kidding ... for now.

CityVille for Dummies coming July 2011 to teach Mayor 101

CityVille for Dummies
The farthest-reaching social game of all time with a peak of over 100 million players is getting its own "Dummies" book. Our friend Kyle Orland returns to co-author the 288-page tutorial book, CityVille for Dummies, with Michelle Oxman. Like FarmVille for Dummies, this guide book will cover everything there is to know about CityVille. And since this book is expected to launch at a much closer date to the game's release, its said it "will be aimed at the new or beginning CityVille player," according to Wiley, the book's publisher.

Currently expected to cost $19.99 upon release, players who pick up CityVille for Dummies can expect to learn how to:

*Construct roads, buildings, restaurants, and more
*Run sales at your businesses and restaurants to keep your residents happy
*Expand your city to include doctors, policemen, firemen, and business owners
*Plant and harvest your own crops to keep restaurants stocked.
*Import and export goods from other countries
*Trade goods and factor in costs of various shipping methods for your goods
    *Interact with neighboring cities
    *Deal with technical issues

And that just about covers everything--all the basics at least. Whether CityVille will still be the game to play come July is unknown, but it's doubtful that another game will take the top spot anytime soon. And if another Zynga game comes out before then, I bet Orland will be all over it.

Would you buy CityVille for Dummies? What do you think of this emerging trend of social game tutorial books and guides?

How would you change CityVille Franchises?

Congratulations. You're the owner of several hot new franchises in CityVille. Whether it's a series of video game stores or a seafood restaurant chain, franchising was set to be one of the hottest new features in Zynga's new city-building game on Facebook. Turned out to be an interesting idea, though more than a few players have expressed frustration with how the whole thing works (or doesn't work, as the case may be). So, I ask you, how would you change CityVille franchises? Would you require players to allow more franchises in their cities? Let players to delete franchises at will? Let mayors put as many franchises as they want in their cities, no matter what the population size? Make sure franchises are less buggy? So, franchise owners, get vocal in the comments below -- it's your right, ya know.

FrontierVille: Decorate for Valentine's Day and win up to 750 Horseshoes

After the release of a slew of Valentine's Day themed decorations in the FrontierVille market, Zynga has decided to give users some major incentive to actually purchase them by launching a Valentine's Day decorating contest. Don't get worried though - you won't need to rush out and shop before February 14 in order to enter, as you'll have a full week after the holiday has come and gone - until February 21 to be exact.

So what exactly does this contest entail? It's simple really - just decorate your homestead in a way that screams of Valentine's Day decorating and celebratin' and then post up to three images of the same homestead (that is, if your decorated plot is larger than a single screenshot can contain) and then post them on the official FrontierVille forums. The top ten homestead designs will be chosen by the FrontierVille team, and then users will have a chance to vote for their favorites of the ten in a poll.

The top choice will win 750 Horseshoes, but two other players will win 500 Horseshoes and 300 Horseshoes, respectively. That's a whole lot of premium currency for doing something that you might likely be doing anyhow - that being decorating your land for Valentine's Day. Wouldn't you like to receive something out of it in return?

FarmVille Valentine's Day Showcase 4 [video]

If you've yet to purchase the Valentine's Day (and Lunar New Year) themed items that were released last night in FarmVille, Zynga has released a new FarmVille Valentine's Day Showcase video (this one is number 4 in the current series) detailing what these newly released items look like in action on a user's farm.

Items like the Pink Gypsy Horse and Magpies are show here in all of their animated glory, but if you were just hoping to get a better feel for how large items like the new Wedding Tent or Red Lantern arch are in comparison to other items on a typical farm, you can definitely use this video for that too. It's odd that we don't see any unreleased items being previewed in this video, though. Does that mean that we won't be seeing any additional Valentine's Day or Lunar New Year items in the game? We'll be sure to let you know either way.

You can check out the short video in full at the top of this post.

Check out the rest of our Valentine's Day coverage right here.

Did you already purchase any of these items for your farm, or will seeing these items in the video persuade you to purchase some you might not have otherwise?

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Butterfly Garden & Leprechaun Hat Pot

It seems as though Zynga is starting to prepare for Spring with these newest unreleased images of items that will be coming to FarmVille in the near future, as both of these new items contain flowers. While one item the Leprechaun Hat Pot could very well be released as part of the current St. Patrick's Day item theme (even as early as this Wednesday), the other item - the Butterfly Garden, looks to be solely in the theme of Spring, with butterflies flying above a fenced in area of what look to be Lilac Daffys and Daffodils.

One thing to note is that the Butterfly Garden almost looks as though it might be something related to the Spring Garden collection feature that we were given a hint of in the last FarmVille podcast. Perhaps the name has been changed? It is possible that this is an entirely unrelated decoration that also happens to be called a "garden," but we'll let you know what ultimately happens with these two items.

As usual, there is no guarantee that either of these items will officially be released in the game, so keep that in mind.

What do you think of these two new items? Do you think the Butterfly Garden will have a function, or will it simply be a large, elaborate decoration?

Cafe World Feed the Irish Feast Catering Order: Everything you need to know

After what appears to be a bit of a delay, a St. Patrick's Day themed catering order has finally launched in Cafe World. This catering order is called "Feed the Irish Feast," and it will see you catering "an Irish spread for Peter and his new friends!" Peter, of course, is the new character that was introduced in the St. Patrick's Day goals proper, and you will need to have completed those goals before attempting this mission, as it requires you to cook dishes that are only accessible after you unlock them in this mission series.

For a complete look at how to unlock the dishes necessary to complete this order, check out our full guide. Otherwise, meet us behind the break to see what it takes to make this feast a success.
This mission favors cooking more than it does item collection, as you'll need to cook four different dishes in mass quantities in order to complete it. You'll need to cook the Irish Stew 200 times, Corned Beef and Cabbage 55 times, Mince Tartlets 55 times
and Rice Pudding 30 times.

If you'd rather not take the time to cook these dishes, or even wait for your friends to do so, you can skip any of these dishes by spending anywhere from 28 to 36 Cafe Cash per dish to complete them automatically. If you do wish to cook these dishes, you'll be able to make good use of your time waiting for these dishes to cook by collecting the one collectible in this job - 12 Irish Wind Spinners (think a pinwheel, but in green, white, and orange/red). You'll need to click on the "Ask" button to send individual gift requests to your friends in order to finish this step, or purchase the Irish Wind Spinners for 4 Cafe Cash.

You'll be able to bring up to 18 of your friends in on this mission with you, which does offer you more active players on your team than most jobs, but you'll still only have three days to finish the mission for the highest ranking. If you can complete the job in less than three days, you'll earn 12 Catering Points, 3200 Cafe Points, 75000 coins, and a St. Patty's Day Cooler, which is a decorative item that looks like a pot of gold filled with drinks, rather than gold, with a rainbow arched across the top.

Finishing the job within five days will earn you the two-star rating, 8 Catering Points, 2300 Cafe Points and 50,000 coins. You won't earn the special decoration though, so keep that in mind. Finally, finishing the mission at any time past the first five days of accepting it will earn you a single star, 4 Catering Points, 1400 Cafe Points, and 30,000 coins.

There doesn't appear to be a time limit for when you must accept this mission, so feel free to take all of the time you need to complete the St. Patrick's Day goals to unlock the dishes necessary to come back and complete this catering order.

Check out the rest of our St. Patrick's Day 2011 coverage right here.

What do you think of this St. Patrick's Day catering order? Is it too difficult, or do you enjoy a challenge?

FarmVille: Inactive "mutual friends" pop-ups cause annoyance for farmers

Zynga has launched a new set of pop-ups and wall posts in FarmVille apparently in an attempt to bring players back to the farm (that is, those players that have become inactive because they haven't played the game over an extended period of time).

Now, when visiting a friends' farm, if you have any mutual friends with that person that also plays FarmVille, you will see a pop-up like the one above, asking you to help bring that lost, inactive player back to the game. Clicking on "Accept" shows you a wall post like the one below, where you can post to that neighbor's wall, saying that you miss seeing them playing the game, and speaking for your friend in the process.
As you might expect, the hassle of seeing new pop-ups each time players visit neighbors hasn't been sitting well with friends, and a forum thread has started on the official FarmVille forums to protest its inclusion. While players are annoyed that they have to skip another pop-up just to get back to playing, the entire situation is compacted due to the fact that sometimes, users are being told to post on walls of currently active players, meaning that Zynga's algorithm for determining inactive players is apparently bugged.

Players like DesertRain seem to sum up the concerns nicely:

I don't like it. There's a reason the one person isn't playing and now I am supposed to spam them back into the game? To me this is wrong on so many levels.

DesertRain has a point. Players aren't going to stop playing FarmVille simply because they forget the game exists. There has to be a reason for them to stop playing, whether that be the fact that they simply aren't having any fun, the fact that they don't like a particular feature or way certain in-game elements are handled or so on. That being the case, it will be interesting to see if this method actually works to bring back any players whatsoever, but I guess we'll give Zynga the benefit of the doubt for at least trying.

What do you think of this new system? Do you see a purpose in finding out who your inactive neighbors are? Do you think anyone who receives these wall posts would actually come back to the game?

FrontierVille Fanny versus Bess decorations appear; the heat is on

So, which team are you on? In an obvious (and almost painful) nod to Twilight, Zynga has released both the two Mystery Crates found yesterday and a slew of decorations to FrontierVille in honor of a mini-event of sorts. Except instead of sparkly vampires against eternally shirtless werewolves, it's Fanny versus Bess. It's your job to take a side--if you're willing to put some Horseshoes behind your decision.

Here are all the decorations that were added in light of this strange event:

    Bess' Lasso – 4 Horseshoes
    Bess' Diorama – 3,800 coins
    Bess' Flower – 2,850 coins
    Fanny's Desk – 4 Horseshoes
    Fanny's books – 3,800 coins
    Fanny's flowers – 2,850 coins

Luckily, only two of these items cost Horseshoes. While there isn't any major event tied to these decorations, I'd imagine that something much bigger is cooking. A cage fight? A triathlon, perhaps? Well, whatever is, we'll be all over it.

Have you picked any of these decorations in the game yet? Which side are you on--Fanny or Bess?

FarmVille English Countryside Scam Alert: Unwither Clocks aren't free

Unwither Clock Scam
At this point, the last thing Zynga would be giving away for free is an Unwither Clock to FarmVille players. The item costs 55 Farm Cash, so why would the company throw that away? As it turns out, the posts circulating Facebook offering free Unwither Clocks are scams. Players have already reported the scam to FarmVille Freak, and clicking on the offer opens a page that looks nothing like the standard News Feed reward page. Whatever you do, do not accept this offer, because who knows what's behind it (hint: malware). And be sure to protect your friends by telling them about this scam.

Have you seen this scam in particular in your News Feed? This problem has gone on long enough, so how do you think Zynga should handle it?

Earn 150 free FarmVille Farm Cash in Disney Movie Club promotion

Free money is good money, no? (Well, almost free.) Another Sponsored Link has appeared beneath the game screen for FarmVille farmers. This time, Zynga is offering 150 Farm Cash for players that sign up for Disney's Movie Club service. Just click on the link beneath the game screen that has a picture of Mike from Monsters Inc. (one of Pixar's best, if you ask me). Afterward, you'll be shown a pop-up offering the 150 Farm Cash, so click on the big green button if you're interested.

From there, it's time to sign up for the Disney Movie Club. However, the pricing structure is rather complicated--this is no Netflix. According to the service's terms, you must agree to buy five DVDs through the service in the next year, which are $19.95 a piece. However, you can cut that cost buy selecting two titles immediately at a discount. Honestly, this could very well turn out to cost more money than it's worth. But if you're a hardcore Disney fan and itching for some Farm Cash, then no one is stopping you.

Have you signed up for the Disney Movie Club for the "free" Farm Cash? What do you think of this offer compared to Zynga offers in the past?

Quote of the Moment: 'There's not a graphic arms race here' in social games

"There's not a graphic arms race here. There's an art quality arms race, but nobody is racing to bigger, better, more polygons. People are playing these games on their lunch break at office computers with no administrative access. That means don't give me stupid plugins. That means not radically reinventing the wheel."

Brenda Brathwaite of Loot Drop said this in an interview with Inside Social Games recently. While it's not exactly shocking news, it sure gives us a better of idea of where most social game designers might be focused. In other words, it would be safe to assume that innovations in the genre aren't coming in the form of interfaces or graphics, but in art style and payment models. However, tell that to studios like EA who seem to have embraced 3D graphics as the future of Facebook games.

"Change needs to happen in very small increments," Brathwaite said to Inside Social Games, "so that people don't show up to your game and go 'Ew'." In short, don't expect any groundbreaking revolutions to how friends are incorporated into the game screen anytime, if Brathwaite has anything to say on the matter. But according to her, the biggest innovation has everything to do with increasing that 10 percent of paying customers without killing the fun of the game.

Brathwaite explained Loot Drop's approach to monetizing games with an odd if accurate analogy: "We're going for the mariachi's side of the street. We don't want you to feel there's a panhandler begging you for money in the middle of the game." Both players and outsiders cry that social game developers care about one thing: the money; and frankly, it's true. However, it's not all selfish intent--social games can't exist without successful, unobtrusive payment models, which seems to be exactly what Brathwaite is out to perfect. Maybe after that's figured out we can focus on cooler things ... like 3D.

Do you think Brathwaite and Loot Drop are focused on the right things? What's the next major change you would like to see in social games?

Lunchtime Poll: Would you buy a Facebook game players guide?

Surely many of you buy the players guide every time a new Pokemon game releases (you can admit it, we're all friends here), so why not buy one for your favorite Facebook game. CityVille Info recently found a piece of software called the CityVille Domination Guide, which claims to improve your mayoral prowess for the limited time price of $27. Granted, I have my doubts of this offer's legitimacy--nor would I recommend you rush to buy it either--but what about the guide books you can easily find in your nearest major bookstore? Our friends Kyle Orland and Angela Morales recently released their first guide through the established Dummies franchise, FarmVille for Dummies, with Orland working on a second book for CityVille. Legitimate or not, these offers beg the question:

Would you buy a Facebook game guide?
If it could give me a chance of getting ahead, sure!Absolutely not. I spend enough money on these games!I don't care enough to buy a players guide. If it was from a legitimate source, I'd pick one up.
