iPhone 4S Weekend Sales Top 4 Million

Apple said today they sold more than four million iPhone 4S in the three days since its launch on October 14. They also report that more than 25 million customers are now using iOS 5, which upgrades, but still doesn’t even come close to fixing the iPhone’s Game Center.

Alphadia Is So Old-School They Tore The School Down

A hundred years after some great war ended and the nations of Alphadia settled into a peaceful co-existence, the vile Schwarzschild Empire rises, as German-sounding empires often do in Japanese role-playing games. They’re tired of peace through being peaceful and would prefer that old standby, peace through tyranny. In the midst of this chaos a mysterious girl meets a band of stalwart heroes and decides to stand with them in a column as they fight their way from city to city, gathering new equipment and whatever quests might further the plot. It’s all just an excuse to get four spiky-haired people on the right of the screen to wade through a colourful array of left-siders for 30 or so hours.

This is the bare essence of the Japanese turn-based RPGs of our youth, brought back to life but functioning only at the most basic level. The developers did try to mix things up by assigning one of six elements to each playable character and establishing a hierarchy of those elements so someone with say, a fire affinity would be weak against an enemy aligned with water, but I’ve spent several hours playing now and have never had to use one of those fancy powers my characters have learned through levelling. Just tap the ‘Auto’ button and watch the little bastards get to work.

One Of Comics’ Best Writers Wants To Turn His Newest Work Into A Game

When I saw Greg Rucka at the Oni Press booth during New York Comic-Con, I was just going to say how much I’m enjoying his run on the re-launch of The Punisher. (Oni’s published Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comics, among others.) But, when I saw that he was wearing a N7 Mass Effect t-shirt, I remembered that he’s also a pretty avid gamer and wrote a Perfect Dark novel that coincided with the Perfect Dark Zero Xbox 360 launch title. So I had a quick chat with him about co-op coming to Mass Effect 3 and which of his creator-owned works he’d want turned into a video game. Sword-fighting on a giant zeppelin? Count me in.

Double Fine’s Iron Brigade Gets New Missions, Horde Mode

The yet to be priced or dated downloadable content for Iron Brigade, the game formerly known as Trenched, is called Rise of the Martian Bear.
Iron Brigade recently had to change its name due to a copyright claim by the makers of a Portuguese game named Trench. Man, everyone seems to be having these sorts of conflicts lately, huh?

Thanks For Sharing This Metal Gear Drawing, Hideo Kojima!

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima posted this drawing of Metal Gear Solid creator Raiden. It’s not clear if this is just a drawing or whether it’s in relation to the upcoming title Metal Gear Solid:

Man Named Knucklez Doubles Space Invaders World Record

Already a record score holder for several games (Phoenix and Space Fury) the Space Invaders crown is Knucklez’s biggest achievement yet, but he’s not planning on stopping there. Richie’s next stop is the Twin Galaxies Video Game Festival in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he’ll be taking Space Invaders into the Iron-Man endurance contest, despite the game’s well-documented kill screen bug. That’s a ballsy move, but I’d expect nothing less from Richie Knucklez, defender of the Earth.

What You Need To Know About Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3’s Heroes And Heralds Mode

As divulged by producer Ryoji Niitsuma , it’ll be a free mode, out after the game launches, which builds in a CCG element to the fighting action. With each fight you win, you’ll get cards that let you use powers you wouldn’t normally have, like projectile invincibility. When the crowd went crazy watching Ryu use a Parry ability in the trailer, it was later revealed that Parry will be only available in Heroes & Heralds mode as a card move. In Heroes and Heralds, players can form clans and battle with others and Capcom’s Seth Killian hinted that characters from Power Stone or Breath of Fire games might show up as art on collectible cards in H&H mode. There’ll be over 100 cards used in combinations of three — which opponents will be allowed to see-that will total out to 1.2 million configuration combinations.

While the basic premise of the card tweaks in H&H Mode aren’t all that different from SFxT‘s Gem Mode, the former got a much warmer reception during its unveiling. When I asked Killian why he thought that might be he said that one’s being seen as serious strategic business whereas the other’s being thought of as a way to propagate cheesiness. We’ll see how differently they get used when Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 comes out in November and Street Fighter x Tekken hits next March.

Exploring The Secret World’s Most Mysterious Secret Society

It’s Dragon week for The Secret World, with new information, assets, and other odds and ends about these shadowy manipulators appearing on the game’s website each day. There’s a test there that places visitors in one of the three societies, so maybe you’ll find subtlety your strong point, like I did.

Don’t worry, Templar and Illuminati members. We’ll let you have your turn. For now, feel free to look through our gallery and admire how powerful we are.

So What Makes Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 So Ultimate?

Most fans know that Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be adding 12 new characters to the roster, including fan-favorites like Strider Hryu on the Capcom side and Hawkeye on the Marvel side. Capcom revealed that all the game’s characters will also be playable in up to six alternate looks for each. So with Spider-Man, the alternats will be Spider-Armor 2.0, Big Time from the Dan Slott storylines, and the mostly white FF Spidey from Jonathan Hickman’s series. (No Miles Morales?!) As for Felicia from Darkstalkers, her classic look got contrasted by her Puzzle Fighter interpretation as well as various palette variations from her appearance in other Capcom games.

You’ll also get reversible package art, with a choice of a drawing from Mark Brooks (Marvel) or Shinkiro (Capcom) and new backgrounds as well. Marvel New York gets further represented in the City That Never Sleeps, all the signage is a reference to people, places or thing in the Marvel Universe like the Coffee Bean café where Peter Parker hangs out or the law offices of Nelson & Murdock. There’s also the Days of Future Past background, which references the alternate future from the Chris Claremont/John Byrne run on Uncanny X-Men. The destroyed landscape has giant Sentinels looming in the background, along with the iconic Wanted poster with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 characters who didn’t make it into MvC3.

Proof Tim Schafer Can Do Whatever The Hell He Wants

Here’s the thing – if anyone other than Tim Schafer’s Double Fine had released Happy Action Theater, via the above trailer, I’m sure it would have either been a) roundly ignored or b) written off as a flaccid party game. But do you know what? Tim Schafer has earned the right to create a stupidly fun party game. And he’s earned the right to have me play it.
It looks like a Kinect version of Warioware – a series of utterly insane mini games that are incredibly short, yet incredibly inventive. Happy Action Theater looks as though it appeals to the insane fun of having your living room transformed into a virtual play area and Schafer himself claims the game appeals to “three-year-olds or college dorm rooms full of drunken 20-year-olds.”
I’m not three years old, and I don’t drink – but hey, I will most likely play this game. It is being released this Christmas via Xbox LIVE.

Rage Creators Weren’t Prepared For Tough Questions

You may recall that a couple of weeks ago, Gamasutra’s Brandon Sheffield ran an interview with id Software’s CEO Todd Hollenshead about Rage. In the interview, Sheffield expressed some doubts about the game, and wasn’t convinced by many of Hollenshead’s answers. It was a solid piece of journalism, and as our own Stephen Totilo pointed out, it’s the kind of interview we could use more of.
Sheffield has penned an op-ed about the interview and the response it prompted. In the piece, he recounts playing the game at a San Francisco event, and how as he played, time and again he found himself flummoxed by the design decisions that id had made. After playing, he sat down to talk with Hollenshead and Rage artist Andy Chang and asked about the issues he noticed.

News How 9/11 Gave Us Grand Theft Auto’s Iconic Cover Style

There was September 11. Then there was October 22, when Grand Theft Auto III released, at a time when the United States was extremely high strung about things like the violence and moral relativism for which the series is known. Rockstar Games’ Dan Houser, in a rare interview, said that the game did strip out some content as a concession to the tension of the current times.

“I think one mission got removed,” Houser told IGN. Also, “there was a non-interactive jumbo jet, just to give some life to the sky, that looked like it could pass through a building. That got adjusted, and a few lines of radio dialogue in the talk show. We were really very sensitive to stuff though because we’d watched on our doorstep, you know?”

Further, the game’s box art was redesigned partly because of 9/11. “There was an old box that you can still see online because it was the packaging in Europe. It was the same drawing style but done like an old movie poster with a blown up bridge and some police firing in the air and some helicopters and a bunch of the characters are different sizes,” Houser said. “We thought, ‘that’s a bit heavy, actually, it doesn’t really gel.’”

So the artist came up with the windowpane montage “overnight,” Houser said, the style that has marked Grand Theft Auto‘s packaging in the 10 years since.

There’s much more, covering aspect of the game’s conception, the design team’s ambition and yes, becoming the media’s violent video game whipping boy, at the link.

Remember This?

Can you remember this game from one tiny segment of a screenshot? Of course you can. I think I may have made this one a little bit too easy. Don’t think I’ll need to go to a second screen for this one. Don’t let me down folks!

Since when did the MP become the game?

Let me begin first, modern day competitive online games are rubbish. I like online gaming on PC and consoles, but competitive games are stupid.

One thing I can't stand this generation is something Halo 2 caused. The multiplayer SECTION of the game being popularised as 'the game'. This is something I can't stand, this has continued into games such as the Call of Duty series and especially when the blockbuster story or campaign gets ignored for essentially what has been exactly the same game for the past 4 years or so.
This is a typical conversation concerning this situation I hate;

Me: "Have you played the new Call of Duty?"
Friend: "Yeah! It's awesome!"
Me: "That's great! So what set pieces does the game have this time?"
Friend: "I've not played the campaign yet, but I'm halfway heading towards Prestige."

Or the seminal;

Me "How's the new Call of Duty?"
Friend "Agh, the bullet detection is rubbish, the sound of the guns aren't very good and the maps are flawed"
Me "Oh right, so I guess that means that the campaign has rubbish level design then? Not as good as the old one?"
Friend "I wouldn't know, I've been busy playing the multiplayer, I only played half an hour of the campaign."

And this is something that comes up regularly. Just HOW many people in the world are actually thinking that the multiplayer is the game and then actively complain about the game being rubbish after playing ALL FOUR of the maps available in each mode and just see the game flopping just because the ATTACHED multiplayer that hardly changes, UT2003 and UT2K4 had more changes in a year than either CoD or Halo.
Then add to that insult of the level designers, story writers, animation directors. The campaign isn't played for about a week until they're bored of the MP and IN COMPARISON because of all the trigger happy shooting online for that week and mastering the shooting mechanics obsessively, the game's AI seems 'too easy'.

A lot of reviews these days for these kind of first person shooters, just review the multiplayer section and ignore the campaign as if it was some kind of last minute addition, when ACTUALLY, the campaign was what the game was intended to be marketed AS. The reason the developers built an engine, the reason the motion capture was so closely adapted for animation, the reason that the team hired a top class Hollywood composer to do the soundtrack, all gets ignored until later, when the player is bored and rushes through it like having ADHD just to get either Achievements or Trophies. What a sad world we live in and the game development community is encouraging this, because it makes money and everyone follows, getting the line between 'additional selling point' and 'high budget game' mixed up. There may not be another Zynga game in which Energy is more important than in Adventure World. Every switch thrown, every puzzle solved and beastie whacked costs you the Facebook game juice. Players often find themselves without Energy minutes into an Expedition. But this isn't the time for whining--it's time to show you the value of upgrading your Tools and how to do it.

Tools: The Game Changer
If you noticed, each piece of debris and monster has a life bar, and normally take multiple hits with your Whip or Machete to whittle down. This, of course, quickly becomes a waste in later Expeditions purely due to the amount of obstacles in your path. But increasing the amount of damage your various Tools inflict against said baddies could considerably reduce the Energy spend in-game.

For instance, say a Snake has three hit points and is Level 5. Since monsters can hit back in this game, it could take three to five Energy before an enemy goes down. Now, imagine if you had upgraded your Whip to Level 2. Offing that Snake would take just two to four Energy with a beefier Whip. The same situation applies to Tools like the Machete.
Adventure World Tool Shop inside
And Now For Your How-To
Adventure World Tool Shop outsideUpgrading your Tools in Adventure World is simple. All you need to do is head back to Base Camp from an Expedition, and look for a makeshift hut that should already be in place in your headquarters. When you click on the Tool Shop, a window will appear featuring all the Tools you've found thus far on your journeys. Click on the Tool you wish to upgrade.

Once you click on a Tool to upgrade, you'll notice that each Tool costs Coins to upgrade. That's it--no asking friends to help you out with materials or farming certain crops for special items. Just the goods you find during your travels in search of El Dorado. However, Coins are actually quite rare in this game, so you'll need to save and spend wisely.

When you have enough Coins for an upgrade, just click on the appropriate icon to pay up. Tool upgrades are also level-locked, meaning you must reach a certain level for most Tools before being able to upgrade them using Coins. If you're feeling impatient, you could always unlock access to those higher level Tools early using Adventure Cash.

Just One Small Catch...
However, some Tool upgrades do require an extra boost: your Tool Shop. Yes, the building itself can be upgraded, too. And this time, you will need items from your friends. (Just think of how things work in CityVille.) Luckily, you only have to do this about twice to unlock access to all of the game's Tools. Then, it's back onto leveling up to access new upgrades for Coins.
Adventure World Tool Shop Upgrade
Upgraded Tools are hands-down the way to go, if you want to save precious Energy for the good stuff, that is. You know, exploring ... uncovering the secrets of El Dorado? That kind of stuff. Your wallet might thank us later.

GT5 made me see the truth

I love my racing games and the main franchise I have been playing over the years has been Forza, the latest being Forza 3 and I used to think that game was a sim. But recently I bought GT5 and I wasnt expecting that much because I hated prologue to the exstent that I condemd the Gran Turismo franchise in general, don't get me wrong it looked great but to me everything elese didnt feel right. The handling didn't feel realistic and the racing was very mundaine due to the average A.I, so I kept with the Forza franchise proclaiming it to be the greatest racer on any console. The early videos of GT5 didnt tempt me, it still looked like they had only bothered with the cars and everything else they had imported from the PS2 and the engine noises were still terrible but then came E3 2010 and sony showed a video of GT5 and it blew me away, they had sorted the engine noises, sorted the terrible tyre squeel and added some much needed detail to the rest of the game. Then came the deal maker, they had finally shown the weather which instantly made me want the game there and then but unfortunatly it wasn't releasing till November which left me with Forza 3.

I expected it to be better than Forza 3 but not to the extent that it is. As soon as I started playing GT5 it had me hooked, the handing felt amazing even with a pad (my steering wheel hadn't arrived) and I got stuck into the Aspec mode and I was instantly satisfied. A couple of days after my copy of gt5 arrived my wheel finally came and thats when I realised how arcadey Forza really is. Obviously I was still playing it but the more time I spent with GT5 and went back to Forza the worse it became. Don't get me wrong Forza isn't a bad game but the more I played GT5 the more Forza felt like a Project gotham type game, it felt floaty and like the car wasnt connected to the ground. GT5 on the other hand even with pad translated the road perfectly through my hands so I could feel what the car was doing. GT5 has its bad points too but they are superficial descrepancys and in no way affect the gameplay so i'm not going to list them because you already know what they are.

Like I said I used to think Forza was a really good sim, now I know its just a really good driving game. Its not just the handling where Forza falls short, take for instance the incar view. I used to use that view on forza but after playing GT5 like that It doesnt feel right and i'm not talking about graphics, its the way the steering wheel only moves an inch either way and how the car seems to be on a railway track. I'm hoping Forza 4 can corret these issues because GT5 will lose its shine one day and i'm going to need a driving game to tide me over untill GT6 but Turn 10 will have to sort alot of issues, otherwise I don't think I could play a Forza game again. Not after playing a proper SIM.

Demo Showdown: Bulletstorm vs: Crysis 2

Tuesday was a good day for demos... especially if you have a 360 with a Gold account. Two heavy hitting demos were released: Bulletstorm from Epic Games, and Crysis 2 from Crytek. But in a time where COD is king and shooters are a dime a dozen, can either of these titles stand out?

I will start my mini comparison with Bulletstorm. Why? Because for the first 24 hours I was unable to actually play the Crysis 2 demo. Why? I am not 100% percent sure, but when using my wireless, the game kept freezing (on the loading screen before entering a match). To make matters worse, the freeze was a terminal one that required me to get up, walk to my TV/Xbox, and hit reset. I have only had that happen maybe once in my 360's life. After a number of failed tries I searched online and found out that others were having the same problem. The only pattern I could see was that the freezing tended to occur with people who were using wireless. Since my modem was one story up, I opted to just leave my 360 attached to my 50 inch TV... and play Bulletstorm.

BULLETSTORM:

My first impressions of the Bulletstorm demo was that it was a lot of fun. Most importantly, it did not take itself too seriously. Too many shooters take themselves far too seriously. Just relax and have fun I say! Bulletstorm reminded me of a cross between Gears of War (this is Epic...) and Borderlands (a surprise favorite of mine).

As far as the combat goes, the lasso was enjoyable. I especially enjoyed pulling someone towards me and then kicking them away, and then repeating about 3-4 times (I called it the "yo-yo"). The skill shots gave the game a different flair, but I am not sure if that it really my kind of thing. I tend to just like the run and gun... and that was fun to do in Bulletstorm, even if it made a short demo feel even shorter. That being said, I really liked the look of some of the guns. The 4 barrel shotgun (i.e. over the top) looks to be right up my alley.

Mechanics wise, Bulletstorm felt very fluid and natural. It just felt right from the beginning. There was no adjustment period. The demo was kind of easy however, although harder difficulty settings will be in the final version, so no worries.

Visually it was impressive, as should be expected from Epic. I give the graphics and art style an edge over Crysis 2 (mind you, multiplayer is always toned down with graphics...). I applaud the abundance of color... something that so many modern games tend to shy from (Gears and Fallout being obvious examples). When my wife saw the demo she sat down... watched me kick and splatter a bunch of guys... and then said "this is gross. This is NOT my kind of game" as she walked out of the room. I think the minigun to a dude's face at point blank range may have put her off.

CRYSIS 2

Today I did the unthinkable. I unplugged my 360 from my new, beautiful 50 inch TV and carried it upstairs. I dug around for some cords, eventually found my Ethernet cable, haphazardly made room on my office desk... and plugged into my 23 inch LCD monitor. "This better be good" I grumbled under my breath. As I loaded my first match I fully expected yet another terminal freeze... but no... SUCCESS! I was met with a visually pleasing rooftop battlefield, very much akin to something you would see in COD.

So how are the graphics? Does it live up to the hype? Well, I think my wife put it best when she walked in the room: "What is this?" she said. "A new demo for a new game that is supposed to be pretty good" I said. She then walked out.. "It looks like all the other games." I had to agree. I would put the graphics on par with COD. Plus, it really has the look of COD. Halo looks like Halo. Gears looks like Gears. Killzone like Killzone. Crysis (the multiplayer demo) reminds me of COD. That is a good thing in my books... but at this point in the life of the console, I wasn't expecting groundbreaking graphics changes. Boast all you want Crytek... I clearly saw those texture and object pop-ins.

Crysis 2 really does seem to be going after the COD/Halo empires. I was skeptical whether it would succeed... those are two great, yet different online experiences. In the end, I think that Crysis blends the best elements of both games brilliantly, but again it feels more like COD than Halo. I loved the "energy" meter and the risk/benefits of armor/stealth/sprint/nanovisio n. It made me think much differently than in other shooters. I also loved the ability to vault over walls... a huge innovation in mobility over both COD and Halo. Finally, I liked the class/perk/killstreak features that help make COD so addictive.

Despite some reports of laggy controls in the interwebz, I found the controls to be very tight (you can adjust how tight or loose they are). Grenade controls were not fluid however. Mind you, in Halo/COD you can throw them like candy, which has it's up and downs in games.

Online was very stable with no major lag. I did spawn in front of enemies once or twice, but overall my experience was solid and smooth. The demo was enjoyable to the point that I ALMOST forgot the evening previous with it's numerous terminal freezes.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

So at the end of the day, can either of these titles grab the attention/imagination of the Joe-shooter-public? Is there really any more room for innovation in the shooter genre? Are they worthy of your hard earned dollar?

I had low expectations of Bulletstorm. I was pleasantly surprised. Actually, I should not have been surprised, Epic makes solid games. In the end I think Bulletstorm will do just fine with it's skill-shot gameplay and ass-kicking good fun. Loved the marketing campaign! Cliff B talking about doing anything he put his mind to, and blowing out assholes, was classic. The "Believe" spoof was gold. I will probably get it when the price drops and play it through once, and then put it away. Shooters need RPG elements to keep me addicted. Still, this looks set to top Gears in my books... a game that took itself far too seriously for my tastes.

Crysis 2 may have earned a day one buy for me. I think it succeeded in blending Halo and COD (with more COD), while still adding something new and unique with the armor/stealth and increased mobility. Although I am not a big COD fan (or shooter fan in general), I admit to becoming a bit of a Halo multiplayer addict as of late. I think this demo has captured my interest by blending what I like most from shooter multiplayer games... while still bringing something new to the table.

Angry Birds for PC

Finally, those birds that everybody likes has arrived on PC. After iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile versions, also iPhone cases and toys, Angry Birds has finally arrived on the PC thanks to the Intel App Up store. It’ll work fine and dandy on laptops and netbooks and will cost you only $4.99 to download. Nice price for this lovely game.

Angry Birds is a global phenomenon in mobile gaming and the top grossing iPhone app of 2010. So if you’re not a smart-phone wielding hipster, you no longer have an excuse not to be part of this franchise.

Overall it’s pretty much an identical game play experience to the iPhone app, with some minor differences. It’s snappy, gorgeous, and it sounds amazing. On the netbook version you use a mouse or trackpad instead of touch. There is an open hand icon when the mouse is in hover state, and a closed hand icon when you are clicking or dragging. This visible clue when pulling the slingshot is a nice aid. It allows you to fine tune shots more than just observing the angle of the slingshot band.

Angry Birds for PC

Larger screen means more visibility in the game. On many levels you can see the target that can’t be seen on the iPhone. The previous shot trail is more easily seen, allowing fine tuning of your next shot. Overall the animations and physics seem to have more fluidity.

In terms of features, options, menu etc it’s pretty close to the original. On the netbook the replay level icon has been added to the game space. So you don’t need to pause first then replay. If you start off with bad shot, just click the replay icon, then you can start over. Saving a click is nice. There is a Menu button in the Pause menu that gets you back to the Start screen. There are some things not in play on the netbook version. The leader board and achievements are not available in the main menu. The Golden Eggs are there.

Angry Birds strikes an interesting balance of repetitive, simple tasks and challenging game play working for the many scenarios. So, if you liked this game on your iPhone or Android phone, you’ll sure like it on your big PC screen. If you are new player, don’t hesitate and join the fun now.

    - Angry Birds PC Updated

    The PC version was updated last week which we talked about in this post. This update will finally include all episodes of Ham ‘Em High and the two chapters of Mine and Dine. I’m sure this is welcome news for all the PC players who have been feeling left out. It shouldn’t have taken this long to get all the episodes out but that’s in the past now so lets just get to playing. Since all the chapters are available you also have access to all of the golden eggs. You can finally complete your collection!

    As a side note because I didn’t want to do an entire post about the subject, have you all seen the Angry Birds bra? It’s available over on etsy  you should go check it out. I personally don’t know anyone who would wear it but i’m sure there is someone out there  who would. I don’t recommend buying this for you girlfriend or wife unless she really loves angry birds.

Has Nintendo Abandoned the Hardcore Gamer?

This is one of the hot potatoes of the gaming realm. Is Nintendo to focused on the casual gamer to make games for the hardcore gamer?

(If you don't want to read all this just watch the video at the bottom, and yes, the video is my video so it's still my original work)

Nintendo, savior of the gaming world once, Giant in gaming revolution, advocate to the casual, abandoned-er of their supporters. I've heard Nintendo called all of these things and more in recent times. While these conclusions are partially true that Nintendo has shifted to towards the casual market they haven't abandoned the hardcore gamer all together.

How can I say this? Have I seen the Wii market? Yes. Yes I have. I completely realize that something like 85-90% of the Wii market is casual games/mini-games, but is that really Nintendo's fault? No. Nintendo doesn't make all of these mini-game games that are on their system, they just allow them to be there. And why not? Nintendo makes a percentage of all of the game's sold for it's system so why not let developers develop and sell these games, it doesn't cost Nintendo money.

So why do we only really see casual games/mini-games on the Wii? Good question. It's really a very simple answer. Hardware. From a technical standpoint the Wii is inferior to the Xbox 360 and PS3. It doesn't have the hardware to play games like Killzone, Halo, inFamous, or Fallout. This really started back with the N64 but became apparent during the Gamecube age. The N64 had good hardware but was limited in one major aspect. It used cartridges instead of discs. That's why games like Final Fantasy jumped ship and went to the PSone, they could fit more higher quality material on a disc than a cartridge. The Gamecube really expanded that gap when they released hardware that was inferior (When I say hardware I mean the internals) to the PS2 and the newly released Xbox. Developers really started to move away from Nintendo's system because they couldn't make their games with it's hardware. While some games looked absolutely beautiful on the Gamecube (Metal Gear Solid, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4), most developers decided not to work with it, when they could get better on another console. That gap became a huge divide when the Wii was released. Nintendo wanted to keep their console at an affordable price and so they had to sacrifice their hardware to do that. The hardcore developers, Bethesda, Guerrilla Games, Bungie, Infinity ward, saw this and said (I imagine) "Why would we waste our time trying to make a game on that when we could make a better game on these other consoles" And their absolutely right. Why should they? And more importantly why would you want them to? Imagine I present you with two cars, One's a BMW, and one's a Buick. They cost the same, but the BMW has leather interior, power steering, air conditioning, satellite radio, and free maintenance for life. The Buick has has fabric interior with coffee stains, no power steering, no air conditioning, no limited radio, and limited maintenance. Which would you choose? I think the choice is obvious. That's kind of the way it is with the Wii and Xbox or PS3.

But there are some Hardcore games on the Wii, how do you explain those? Simple. Some developers saw potential for what they could do on the Wii and went with it. But let's look at some of these hardcore games; Deadspace extraction, I'm sorry to say, I really am because I really enjoyed this game, that it did not sell way. In fact it could almost be considered a flop. Madworld, same thing as Deadspace, it just couldn't find a market on the Wii. The second type of hardcore games on the Wii are Nintendo owned games. Legend of Zelda, Mario, Metriod (either owned or first party). All three of these were actually made or owned by Nintendo, and you know what, they were all fun. Could they be considered hardcore? More or less.

The hardcore developers have moved away from the Wii for two major reasons. 1st. The lack of hardware, and 2nd. They have a hard time finding a market on the Wii.

So did Nintendo really abandon the Hardcore gamer in favor of the casual gamer? Yes and No. Nintendo made a choice to make their console more affordable and in doing so they sacrificed hardware. The developers moved away from Nintendo because of the lack of hardware. The lack of hardcore developers meant the lack of hardcore games. The lack of hardcore games meant the lack of hardcore gamers. That left it open for the casual gamers and casual developers to move in.

Sports games should be reviewed differently

There are some common tools that they all use for reviewing games no matter what the genre and the platform of the games are. Also there are some tiny details which makes a game great other than good or an all time classic other than great. Those tiny details that add up to the overall quality of the game are a real factor in making the game great or an all time classic.

What I mean is, whenever a RPG game comes out, you review it with common tools then genre-wise you dig deep and analyse if it`s a good RPG game or not by making comparison with all time RPGS games or the games with succesful formulas in the past. It is different for RPG games, FPS games , adventure games and etc.. And it should be different for sports games as well.

You may ask at this point :
Is it not ? Aren`t they reviewing them differently ?

I believe most of them are not, that`s why I come up with this blog post.

I don`t wanna bore you with psychological stuff but the main reason why many play video games is to have fun. However the fun factors comes from different things. Some like to just play, kill time and have fun no matter what. Some love to play and win, if they lose they don`t have fun. Some only have fun when they play co-op, some enjoy single player games. And for sports games, fun for me and for many comes out of realism.

A sports game is as fun as it is close to real.

By the way the sports game that I`m talking about are not arcade type sports game. I`m not talking about NBa Jam here, what I`m talking about is all those PES, FIFA, NBA 2K , NBA Live, NHL , Madden NFL, Top Spin, Virtua Tennis games. Those games always come up with the suggestion that they are the '' most realistic '' xxx game up to date ( xxx - tennis, basketball, football, soccer etc... )

So the guy who is reviewing a sports game MUST know the dynamics of that sport. He SHOULD know it. If a guy does not really know how to play soccer I do not trust his idea on a soccer game. I can not ! He would not know if the ball shouldn`t float that much in a situation or if a pass should not have gone like that or etc... When a game is suggesting that they are most realistic sports game up to date you should know that sport quite well to analyze it truly.

I`ll go step by step from now on.

* As I suggested above, the guy who is reviewing a sports game HAS TO know that sport well enough to analyze if it`s realistic or not.

* A sports game should be tested longer. To understand the dynamics of that sports game, you need to play at least 50 matches to really understand the flaws and positive sides of tha game.

* A sports game MUST BE played a lot of times against a human opponent before getting reviewed. The Cpu might be bad, or not sufficent, but if the game is offering you a great gameplay, with a human opponent it could turn out to be a classic. Don`t rely on games vs CPU that much.

* The guy who is reviewing the game must be knowledgeable enough to recognize the players, and decide if the attributes are close to real or if the game lacks licenced teams or players that should have been in the game considering their reputation.

* The ball... Look at it ! Look how it moves, look if moves like a baloon or not. The physics of the ball is very determinant in the success of a ball game.

* And again the attributes of a player. As an example: If a mediocre guy is scoring incredible points in a basketball game, making fadeaway jumpshots over defenders over and over again , i doubt it`s close to real. I mean if you don`t know much about basketball and if you play nba games, let`s say against dallas mavericks, when you see dirk nowitzki making those awkward shots you could come up with the idea that the game is not realistic. That game is realistic indeed but as you don`t know how Dirk is doing in the real world you could have or they could have - the guy who is reviewing the game or playing the game- come up with the idea that the game is not close to real.

To sum up, I do not rely much on the sports game reviews as the most important that I look for in a sports game is realism and I do not believe most of the guys who are reviewing those games have sufficient knowledge about the game itself, players or the clubs to have a verdict on the realism of the game.

Should the gaming community have a major shake up?

Before I cut to the chase, I'd like to thank iamsuperman's blog post http://n4g.com/user/blogpos... regarding this issue. In his blog, he mentions what gaming journalism should do in order to present a more "fair and balanced" tone in all of their outlets, whether it be reviews or articles. After reading both that blog and viewing the usual comments that come through here, I had to ask myself: Who's going to take the first step towards a more welcoming atmosphere? I purpose that you, the reader, and I can be the first to achieve a better gaming atmosphere IF we can recognize these aspects.

1.) Opinions and bias are not going away

Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, Onion News, New York Times, and even NPR are all examples of educated indivduals giving biased news at some point or another, whether it would be through suspicious camera shots to their talk show hosts. We need to recognize that another opinion will be leaked in some way shape or form into a review (and some news articles). Yes, it's shocking to see Edge, IGN, and every other reviewing site to think that not every exclusive is the "cat's meow". Even though reviews have objective means of displaying the game's true quality, the reviewers themselves all have dispositions to find different qualities of a game to be more important than others. The problem with this, as seen with some low scores to hyped games, is the backlash received by the community for this disagreeable score; however, the advantage is the ability to find that certain reviewer you can relate with that gives the best explanation (in your opinion) as to why this game is bad/mediocre/good/excellent. The reason this is number one goes by the rule of finding a problem by first recognizing the problem.

_____________________________ ______________________________ _ _____

2.) You're wasting time by complaining, rather than making a change internally.

This is more of an uplifting aspect to the blog, rather than an analysis. How many examples have we seen throughout the Bible where someone is dawned with a sense of "spiritual self-realization" in order to change his/her outlook on life, or a situation at hand? The answer would be dozens upon dozens, I imagine. Although you may be questioning my example, I've used it to help you, as the reader, to realize that this isn't the only generation to be bombarded by these types of complaints, only the technology has changed. Throughout various stories, both fiction and non-fiction, the general outlook of said character usually only makes a turn for better once they've changed internally; more often than nought, the external situation has stayed the same or even gotten worse in some cases, yet he/she stays with their new outlook in order to feel satisfied. With number two on this list, I hoped this would come off as the no-brainer solution.

_____________________________ ______________________________ _ _____

3.) Attack the quality of the review content, not the review score.

If you are a usual to n4g, it's easy for you to notice that ps3 and 360 fanboys feel that certain sites have it out for some of their system's heralded exclusives. Just the other day, I was greeted to comments on Edge's recent review score for inFamous 2 that made me appauled to be a member of this site. For every herd of users who say "But you gave X exclusive a higher score than Y exclusive", you'll be lucky to see a handful of users grab a quote FROM the review and make a complaint about the diction, grammar, etc. You should also note that these attacks against a certain site are exclusive only when exclusives to a console are involved. This is a definite sign where gamers need to understand the reasons why this game received this score before openly attacking it.

I've even seen it in my own personal reviews (there was some good criticism given as well, mind you): http://n4g.com/channel/call...

_____________________________ ______________________________ _ _____

4.) Patience is a virtue

Face it, the reason some of these disagreeable sites have such a strong following is that they started from somewhere, made their way up the ladder, and lost sight of what gamers truly wish to see from the site altogether. I believe that we, the "website sojourners", can be the first to create a better enviroment on the internet if we go after the "meat and potatoes" of the site, rather than bashing the flair that gives the site more hits. You don't need to start a revolution in order for the industry to change for the better, just let your honest voice be heard before the masses and the internet will have one less troll to worry about.

Is the PS4 closer than we think?

Now I am like most PS3 gamers. We want to get more money out of our machine before the next cycle arrives. But looking at the line up this year, I just can't help thinking that a large majority of the big developers have released a game this year which has got to hint at something

The PS3 has enjoyed some wonderful exclusives this year. From Killzone and LBP2 all the way to Resistance and Uncharted 3. It is not really the amount that, to me, hints at a PS4's announcement on the horizon but it is the high quality studios themselves who have released/releasing a game this year. So Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Zipper Interactive, Evolution Studios and more have released/going to release a game this year. That is a lot of major Sony studios

Sony exclusives do sell well. But to release a game pretty much every month or two seems, to me, a bad business plan. Everyone has preference over which exclusive to like but with the situation this year the amount means that not all of us can afford to get every exclusive. I have found it more difficult this year than I have in the past. But you may ask what has this go to do with the PS4

Well it feels that this year is the last hurrah for the PS3. The biggest studios have come/about to come out with big games. These developers usually spend around two to three years developing a game. It may seem plausible to you that in two to three years they will come out with more games for the PS3 but I am not getting that feeling. Media Molecule have already stated they are now looking beyond LittleBigPlanet. The studio director told Edge that they are "stepping away from LittleBigPlanet to focus on some new ideas." A tweet was shortly followed on the media molecule twitter feed which read "Loyal sackfolk - please be reassured that we will always be involved with LBP, at least a bit, and there's lots more fun yet to come! <3".The words "at least a bit" caught my eye. At the moment Media molecule are basically following up some ideas.

A lot may be thinking this might have something to do with narrowing the PS3 and 360 gap. I believe that is true but there could be another motive for this. The amount of games and the price cut shows it has been a busy year for the PS3. I am getting the impression this is the last chance to entice more people to buy a PS3 to increase sales before the PS4 is announced.

I conclude with this open thought to you. Why would Sony release all its major games and unveil a price drop this year? We have had some games announced for 2012 but not many major ones. Could we see a PS4 announcement at E3 2012. I kind of hope not as it means buying a new console but Sony are defiantly indirectly hinting at a new console. Why bunch up all the exclusives into one year if this wasn't so? I would love to know your (N4G users) opinion.

Official Pokemon Game Coming To Smartphones

The Pokemon Company is set to bring an official Pokemon Online game to smartphone devices, marking the first time that an official Nintendo-copyrighted app will be available on the iOS and Android.

Called Pokemon Iie Tap (rougly Pokemon: Say Tap?), the app appears to be a rhythm game where players “tap on Pokemon indigo trading cards to the beat of a song from the anime,” according to a translation by consumer video game site GamesRadar.

According to the game’s official announcement, it will be available for most iOS devices, as well as Android devices running version 2.1 of the platform.

Though this is the first iOS or Android application to carry an official Nintendo copyright, it is not the first mobile app of any kind: a Pokemon mobile phone game called Pokemate was released in Japan in 2006.

Though it is a rarity, Nintendo does have a history of releasing official games on platforms that are not its own, including a promotional Flash game to promote its Tingle character.

A release outside of Japan has not been announced.

DeNA gobbles up Chilean Little Cave Hero maker Atakama Labs

The Little Cave Hero just moved on to a much bigger cave. VentureBeat reports that DeNA has acquired Chilean social game developer Atakama Labs for an undisclosed amount, though the website recalls that the price might be around $6 million. Atakama Labs is best known for quirky Facebook games like Little Cave Hero and artsy iPhone games like Today I Die Again.

It appears that this acquisition was made with specific interest in Atakama, founded by Esteban Sosnik and Tiburcio de la Carcova after fleeing to Santiago, Chile in search of political and economic stability, helping DeNA's mobile efforts. Namely, Atakama Labs will work with DeNA-owned Ngmoco to support the Mobage mobile social game network.

The mobile scene will likely be the next major battlefield for social game creators, especially as social game developers and publishers focus more and more resources on creating the next top 10 app. Most recently, Zynga revealed that it's working on another mobile version of Mafia Wars after shuttering its existing HTML5 endeavor. This question remains, however: Will it be quality games or robust networks that will decide who wins the mobile social gaming wars?

Do you think this was a wise move on DeNA's part to acquire Atakama Labs? What types of games do you hope to see from Atakama now that it's with the Mobage network? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

Kabam on Edgeworld's release and what battles lie ahead [Interview]

Edgeworld
Even at first glance of its war-torn landscape filled with futuristic buildings blasted to bits by the laser weapons of alien and mechanized armies, it's clear that Edgeworld is San Francisco-based developer Kabam's most ambitious project yet. Formerly known as Watercooler, the studio and publisher is filled with fans of traditional strategy PC games. Even CEO Kevin Chou was a world-ranked StarCraft player back in the day.

Inspired by sci-fi staples like Star Wars, Star Trek and even the Halo series of shooter games, Edgeworld is the culmination of Kabam's ongoing mission to bring a true 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) game experience to Facebook. Since the game's "open beta" release in August, the team is hard at work to make that vision a reality as it claims to have in previous games. (As of this writing, the game enjoys over 858,000 monthly players, according to AppData.)

We sat down with Edgeworld Producer James Holloway recently to hear his thoughts on the game post-release, and what plans he and the rest of the Kabam team have for the strategy game in the future.
Edgeworld in action
Now that Edgeworld has released, what are your knee-jerk reactions? What do you love about the game at release, and what would you like to fix most?

We're really pleased with the release so far. We're seeing a lot of people come back to play the game--it has a really high retention. A lot of people are joining Alliances and engaging with each other. In every sector, I see chat is very active. But this is just the beginning.

The biggest thing that I think we're missing is that our Alliance feature is pretty lean right now. The thing that we would like to emphasize more is a cooperative play of the game. I think we have just the basics right now. The new Maps feature is going to integrate very tightly with alliances--you work together [with Alliances] to conquer territory.

We have about four unique turrets and nine units, and that's just the beginning. We're working on a new unit and a new turret that we're really excited about, and those are going to launch in the next month. We'll be introducing higher levels of our buildings. So, there's a lot more content that we need to create, and we're just getting started.

What's the most interesting thing you've seen players do in the game since release--something that never happened during testing?

One thing that we sort of didn't anticipate was that some Alliances and players are attacking each other for resources. At one point we didn't have inter-Alliance resource sharing, so right now you can actually send resources to other players to help them out. So, we didn't have that feature [originally].

But what people were doing was working around that by setting up their Command Centers, which are what contain your resources, outside the perimeter of their turrets. [Players would then] leave their Alliance, cook it, and then attack them and take their resources. So, they were doing resource transfers before the feature was even allowed.

Do you have any interesting or helpful gameplay tips for the players to get ahead in Edgeworld?

Certainly! If you're just starting out, we give every player two days of starter protection wherein no other player can attack you. That's a free few days of protection, and use that time wisely to build up your base and experiment with different configurations. Allow the Factions to attack your base. There's a lot of experimentation with the units.

Players are posting on the forums, talking with each other and also within their Alliances about the best combinations of units to deploy when attacking a base. There are a lot of combinations of tanks and DPS [damage per second] units you can deploy. Rhinos, or other types that have a lot of hit points, can take a lot of fire, and then you can deploy units with longer range or higher DPS behind them.
Edgeworld blast
Depending on what your goals are--like, you might want as many resources as possible--you might want to deploy the Raiders. The Rhinos draw fire from the turrets, while the Spectres sit outside and fire away at the turrets. You really want to upgrade your Spectres to give them a longer range.

We have two different types of units in the game right now: infantry units and mechanized units. It's not necessarily that the mechs are more powerful than the infantry--we're still constantly balancing the game to make sure every unit has its role.

Another thing is that the Warp Gates are really important as far as attacking goes. As you upgrade those, you increase their capacity so that you can actually deploy more units on the ground [at once]. As you unlock more units, the more powerful units will start to consume more of the [Warp Gates'] bandwidth, so you want to upgrade those to deploy the biggest army that you can.

Thanks for talking with us (and for the tips), James.

Territories Could Blow Alliance Play Wide Open

During our chat, Holloway had something brand new to show coming soon to Edgeworld. (Though, it's still in the concept phase, so weren't provided images.) It's a feature tentatively known as "Territories," and the game's producer hopes that it will expand Alliance play into something even more meaningful.

"We haven't seen a past feature like this that I can think of, and we all play a lot of games," Holloway gushes about what he's about to show me. "We're trying to make this a deeper, more robust 4X or empires building game."

As it relates to the game's story, many of the Galactic Union's outposts have been abandoned during the war for Cerulea IV, and they're ripe for the taking. The Territories feature will provide you with a map of the entire planet Cerulea IV, with your home base appearing in the center as a star. Your home base will be surrounded by either hostile, Alliance or neutral territories marked in red, green or simply displayed as abandoned outposts, respectively.
Edgeworld concept art
It's up to you to work with your Alliance to invade either hostile (controlled by enemy Alliances) or neutral outposts, and keep them under your control for as long as possible to reap their benefits, which weren't revealed to us. (Our best guess is additional resources to keep your home bases going.) Players will individually attack outposts just as they would enemy bases, and can call on their Alliance for help asynchronously.

However, players cannot build on these outposts, only bolster their existing defense turrets with their own resources to maintain control of the benefits they provide. This will make it more difficult for enemies to invade. Speaking of invading, players can only enter outposts that are adjacent to their own base or controlled outposts. Eventually, we see the Territories feature becoming a constant struggle between opposing Alliances, and hopefully something for us to work toward.

"This is very different from our other strategy games," Holloway says. "In most cases you individually own tiles on the map, but in this case you kind of need an Alliance to own territory. This is something we're really excited about. We're still working on it and prototyping it, but hopefully we'll have something out in the next four weeks."

What are you impressions of Edgeworld so far? Are you excited about the upcoming Territories feature coming to the game, and what else do you hope to see from developers like Kabam? Sound off in the comments. 4 Comments

Cafe World Signature Dish feature coming soon [Video]

While sometimes it may seem like Cafe World is more about asking your friends for items than actually cooking, a new feature will soon be launching in the game called "Signature Dish," which will apparently put a focus back on cooking. To put it simply, this feature will allow you to combine various ingredients to create your own dishes. These dishes can then be cooked and mastered in your cafe.

Along with this new feature will come a seven-part goal series which will see us building something called the "DishMaster." This DishMaster will give us access to a Taste Lab where we'll be able to combine our ingredients. Each dish starts out with Base Ingredients, and can then be spruced up using meats, herbs, spices or even side dishes. Two base ingredients, for example, may be Spaghetti or White Rice.

Once this feature launches, a new "Taste Lab" section will be available in you cookbook. It looks like we'll be able to create just four signature dishes to start, with additional recipe slots being unlocked with Cafe Cash. When creating dishes, we'll use one of each ingredient to create it, with ingredients coming from another new feature: Farmer Fred's Ingredient Marketplace. Some ingredients go for Cafe Cash, while others cost varying amount of coins. Each particular ingredient updates the stats of your dish; that is, if you use Beef in your recipe, it will automatically gain six hours of cooking time, while Pork adds just four hours. Each ingredient also adds different amount of Cafe Points and Servings to your final product.

Again, this Signature Dish feature is still listed as "coming soon," but it does give those players who like mastering dishes something to be very excited about. We'll make sure to bring you a complete look at these DishMaster goals and the Signature Dish feature when it fully launches in the game, but for now, check out the trailer below for more of a sneak peek.

Zynga Gamestop promotion now live in Cafe World, CityVille, Pioneer Trail and more [UPDATE]

Last night, we brought you a complete rundown of the new GameStop promotion taking place in FarmVille, that will reward users with 1, 3 or 6 mystery goods in the game for redeeming one of the three dollar values of Zynga Game Cards that have been purchased at GameStop. Now, though, the promotion becomes much more interesting (and perhaps more dangerous to your pocketbook), as a similar deal has gone live in Cafe World, Mafia Wars, YoVille, CityVille, the Pioneer Trail and Empires & Allies! Holy cow!

To be specific, each game has its own set of items, some of which are exclusive to this GameStop promotion. If you purchase a $10 Game Card, you're guaranteed to receive just a single Mystery Good, although which item on the list you'll receive looks to truly be a mystery. For $25, your prize goes up to three Mystery Goods, while the top dollar amount - $50 - grants you six prizes. Keep in mind, you'll also receive the appropriate amount of premium currency for the particular game you've redeemed the card in.

Here's a complete look at the items that are available (notice that some are re-releases, or are least far less valuable than others - Cafe World spice, I'm looking at you).

Interestingly, Adventure World isn't found in this promotion, but that's likely due to its still young age. You'll only have until November 6 to take advantage of this offer, but in that time you can purchase as many cards (or as few) as you'd like. Perhaps we'll see Adventure World items added in that time frame, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that possibility just to be safe. For more information, check out the promotion's website.

UPDATE: We've spoken with Zynga, which confirms that Adventure World players won't be left out in the cold. If you're a PowerUp Rewards member (GameStop's rewards program), you'll receive an additional code for a starter pack in Adventure World or the upcoming Mafia Wars 2.

Will you purchase a Zynga Game Card or two during this promotional period? Which game will you redeem it in, and which items are you hoping to win when you do? Let us know in the comments!

CityVille Universities: Everything you need to know

While Elementary, Middle and High Schools in CityVille are one thing (fairly forgettable things, if we're being honest), Zynga is really getting into the school spirit this week with the release of a University feature in the game. This feature is more than just a single building, as you'll be able to build and name your own University consisting of multiple parts. First, you'll need to be at least level 23 to access this feature, but from there, will need to place a Student Center to get things started.

The Student Center takes seven whacks to build. To finish its construction, you'll need to collect various building materials:

    * 6 Gowns
    * 6 Laptops
    * 6 Caps
    * 6 Textbooks
    * 6 Notebooks

The Gowns and Caps are earned through general news posts on your wall, while the other three items are earned through specific requests sent to individual friends. After the construction is finished, you'll get to name your Student Center and overall University. This currently can't be renamed, so make sure to choose something you really like.

After the naming process, you'll get to choose a logo, with a generic CityVille U logo being available for free, and tons more representing real world universities. These real-world logos come via a partnership between Zynga and Collegiate Licensing Company, which allows the logos to be represented in the game virtually. These logos cost City Cash, and come with a catch.

Once you purchase a logo with CIty Cash, it can be used on any duplicate college buildings you build, but not on different buildings. For instance, if I chose the Boise State logo for my first Student Center, and then built another Student Center, I could use the same logo twice without paying for it a second time. However, if I later built a College Stadium, Dorm, etc. I would need to purchase the logo all over again. This, needless to say might turn into a pretty costly endeavor, depending on how many college buildings you plan on investing in.

Speaking of, there are currently four additional buildings that can be constructed, but again, this can only be done after the Student Center is completely built (building materials and all). Here's a rundown of where you extra school spirit can go.

    * Collect Stadium - 150,000 coins
    * Collect Dorm - 30,000 coins
    * University Sign - 8,000 coins
    * Clock Tower - 16,000 coins

It's not unlikely that additional college-themed buildings will be released in the future, but for now, this gives you plenty to work on. As for an overall function, there doesn't really appear to be one here other than simply allowing you to show off your real-world team colors inside your CityVille town. Should we come across anything different, we'll make sure to let you know.

CityVille Campaign Rally sale sees items marked down by up to 50%

Are there any expensive City Cash or coin items in CityVille that you've always wanted to purchase but you never wanted to actually splurge on? Now's the time to head back into the store for a second look then Mayors, as quite a few items have been given a temporary markdown in a "Campaign Rally Sale."

While some items, like a Back to School House are only marked down 10%, and therefore are likely too expensive to be worthwhile (in our example, the home still costs 75 City Cash), there are other deals here worth mentioning. For instance, decorations like the Bandstand and Sign Spinner now cost less than 10 City Cash each due to their 40-50% reductions, while larger items like the Discovery Aquarium are 33% off, bringing that item's particular price to 61 City Cash.

There are plenty of coin items on sale here too, and these share some of the highest discounts in this particular sale. A Celebrity Trailer decoration, for instance, costs 12,000 coins instead of 24,000, while the Camera Shop costs 11,000 coins, down from 22,000. Also keep in mind that some of these items are limited edition, giving you even more incentive to purchase them during this sale (after all, what's better than getting an exclusive item at a cheaper cost if you were already going to purchase one anyway?).

Here's a look at all of the sale items - happy shopping!

Will you purchase any of these items while they're on sale, or did you already have any interesting items city? Which ones did you decide to purchase? Tell us in the comments!

Adventure World Quaking Mine Expedition: Everything you need to know

While Expeditions in Adventure World already come with time limits, the Quaking Mine Expedition is particularly rushed as a mine is about to collapse! Ok, sure, you can take your time completing this Expedition, and won't really have to worry about the mine collapsing, but in the story things are a wreck! We're here to guide you through the Quaking Mine, but before you begin, make sure you have the required 1300 Supplies, along with 5 each of Food, Fuel and Water to get started. Quaking Mine has a two day time limit, so don't delay!

The Quaking Idol

    * Recover the Quaking Idol
    * Place the Quaklng Idol on the Pedestal

In this particular Expedition, some careless miners removed the idol of the Earthquake God and now the ground won't stop shaking! To prevent the mine from collapsing, you'll need to find the Quaking Idol and then place it back on its pedestal at the end of the map. In this Expedition, you'll travel along mine tracks while pushing carts. If you find an area that's inaccessible due to raised platforms, more often than not, simply pushing a mine cart into them will lower them (this will become pretty important in a minute).

As for collecting the Quaking Idol itself, you'll first need to locate the switches to turn off the traps blocking it. These are found in mushroom covered rocks, as seen below. While that may not immediately unlock your path to the Idol, it does allow you to get to the switch to turn off the Idol's specific trap.
To place the idol itself, you'll need to push a Mine Cart down a very long track until you reach a series of Skulls. You'll need to activate these skulls in a specific order (note the mushrooms covering the ordered markings back on the mine track) in order to lower the wall blocking your access to the Quaking Idol pedestal.

Crystal Cracker

    * Break 3 Giant Crystals
    * Break 4 Crystal Formations

This one's simple - just walk around the map smashing any crystals you see until you're done. Here's a look at the two different kinds for your reference.

Minecart Valet

    * Push 5 Minecarts to the end of their tracks
    * Ask friends for 10 Flashlight Bulbs

Collecting the Flashlight Bulbs is easily the most difficult portion of this Expedition, as you'll need to wait for others to help you out, rather than being able to do everything yourself. As we said before, the Minecarts can be pushed using energy and will unlock treasures at the end of their tracks. There are only five carts that can be pushed, conveniently enough, so push every cart you see to the end of its track and you'll finish off the first portion of this quest.

Once you've finished these three quests, you'll have completely finished the Quaking Mine Expedition, and will have saved the mine from collapse (and yourself from being squished!). This is a fairly short Expedition, in terms of the length of the map, so unless you run into trouble when collecting the Flashlight Bulbs, you shouldn't have any problem finishing it off in the two day time limit you're given.

Game of the Day: Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates

ice breakers penguin pirates game of the dayFolks, it's the last day of September's Game of the Day Sweepstakes, and what better way to celebrate this beautiful Friday than with one of my favorite games: Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates. It's your classic match 3 game with a goofy penguin pirate theme. Ice Breakers Penguin Pirates starts off like a standard match 3 game, but don't let the first few levels fool you. Games.com has added some new twists such as changing the color of tiles and clearing a path for special items like maps to drop off the board.

You'll have to sharpen your matching skills to beat the clock. Ice Breakers: Penguin Pirates will definitely challenge you! Get to it, Matey. Penguin Pirates await!

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Catch the winter blues at Onisuka057's farm

While DaTigga's isles farm certainly beats all in terms of creating a water-filled landscape, Onisuka057's river mountain farm is a contender for the greatest number of watery FarmVille decorations used. Just like his golden oasis farm, Onisuka057 proves to be a big spender of Farm Cash items, but he does arrange them in impressive ways. By using nine Waterfalls and one Bear Fishing item, he's managed to create the illusion of a massively long river running down the crevices of his mountain. (The mountain itself is the same kind used by ombra231's Italy farm to recreate the Apennine Mountain Range.)

On the bottom of the farm, he's got more Alps intertwined with more than one Lake and Mirror Lake, which are certainly not cheap. While the Lake is readily available at the Market, the Mirror Lake is a random Mystery Box item, so he must've had to buy a lot of those before he got what he wanted.
FarmVille spelled out in hay bales
For more uses of blue, Onizuka057 planted a ton of what appears to be Forget-Me-Nots, which require at least Level 90. In an earlier version of his farm, he even spelled out "FARMVILLE" in what looks like Perfect Bunches of Morning Glory and Iris flowers. I think his farm looked better with all that blue, though the logo version that he made out of hay bales looks good, too.
Which version of Onisuka057's farm do you prefer? Sound off in the comments. 1 Comment

Pioneer Trail Baby Bunyan Goals: Everything you need to know

You know, I've always wondered what old Paul Bunyan looked like as an infant. (Was he always that huge--was him mom even bigger?) With the new series of Baby Bunyan Goals, Zynga looks to answer these questions once and for all in Pioneer Trail.

Much like the Injured Animals of old, players Level 18 and above will soon find a Baby Bunyan of their own, all alone on their homesteads. But this will only happen after chopping trees. Get to choppin', and follow along with our guide below:

Big Food

    * Feed Baby Bunyan Super Baby Gro 8 Times
    * Harvest 50 Potatoes
    * Help 10 Exhausted Storks

Once you find your own Baby Bunyan, it's time to nurse it into the tree-choppin' tyke you always dreamed of. (Weird dreams much?) Just like an Injured Animal, you must ask your friends for Super Baby Gro. While this Goal only requires you to do it eight times, it takes 15 Super Baby Gro to nurse him completely.

Harvesting 50 Potatoes will cost you 4,500 Coins total, and take at least four hours, if you plant them all at once. Exhausted Storks are actually a new Injured Animal that are found either clearing debris or harvesting crops. Of course, they require you to ask friends for even more items to nurse them back to health. Your rewards for completing this massive first Goal are 500 XP, 500 Coins and one Stork.

Big Britches

    * Collect 100 Cotton Puffs
    * Tend 40 Baby Sheep
    * Collect 25 Safety Pins

The 100 Cotton Puffs required for this Goal reportedly come from harvesting Cotton, which is news to us. If the ratio is 1 to 1, harvesting 100 Cotton will cost you 6,000 Coins and take three days at the very least. Tending to 40 Baby Sheep could be tough, though Zynga doesn't distinguish between Sheep or your Homestead or those of your Neighbors. The 25 Safety Pins, of course, come from begging your friends some more. Enjoy 750 XP and 750 Coins for completing this Goal.
Need more Super Gro
Who's A Big Boy

    * Complete Feed Baby Bunyan
    * Bake 25 Cakes In The Inn
    * Collect 25 Baby Clothes

By this point, you're expected to have a fully grown (well, sort of) Baby Bunyan, which again, takes 15 Super Baby Gro. To bake 25 Cakes, you will need 50 Fire and 100 Batter. Fire is first crafted in the Wagon using seven Wood and five Cloth, which amounts to 350 Wood and 250 Cloth. (That's 250 visits to old friends, though you can also turn in the Cotton Collection for five Cloth.)

The 100 Batter will take a whopping 2,000 Food and 90,000 Coins--this is gonna' take awhile. The 25 Baby Clothes are, once more, sourced from friends. For finishing this giant Goal, you will be rewarded with 1000 XP, 1000 Coins and one Baby Giant Blue Ox. More importantly, you'll have your very own Baby Bunyan, which will prove to be a boon to your homestead.
Baby Bunyan About
Click on your Baby Bunyan after clicking "Finish" to ask him to chop trees. Here's the best part: Baby Bunyan can chop down three full trees for you at the cost of zero Energy. However, Baby Bunyan can only do this once daily. Still, that's quite the reward for such an arduous set of Goals, so use him wisely.
