Mafia Wars adds ferocious animals to your family arsenal

Mafia Wars finally releases attack animals as a part of your mafia's arsenal, a move that will most likely have PETA up in arms ... again. Whether you like it or not, you will now be able to acquire and use animals to get a leg up on the competition in fights and robbing.

To see what animals are in your arsenal, head to your Inventory and click on the new Animal tab to see what animals are included. You'll be able to buy a Red Tailed Hawk (25A, 22D) for 300,000 coins and can spend Reward Points for a handful of new (and returning) animals in the store.

The new animals include the following:

- Great White Shark (59A, 21 D)
- Funnel Web Spider (51A, 43 D)
- Arctic Wolf (31A, 58D0
- Hopi Rattle Snake (58A, 32 D)
- Grizzly Bear (25A, 59D)
- Alligator (27A, 48D)
- Falcon (58A, 27D)

What animals have you added to your arsenal so far?

FarmVille Dogs Perform Final Tricks!

The FarmVille dogs are all grown up and have finally learned their final tricks! Up until now, the final tricks were "coming soon" status even if your Dog had finished all the required training.

Each breed of dog has specific final tricks. The Collie harvests 20 animals, the Terrier harvests ducks, the Sheep Dog harvests sheep and the Golden Retriever fetches consumables. FarmVille Freak Skiwi007 reported that her Golden fetched a whopping 50 coins! As reported by the official FarmVille forum, the Heeler will harvest cows as its final trick.

All of the final tricks can be used once per 24 hours.

What has your Golden Retriever fetched? Are you happy with your puppy purchase and their final trick?

FarmVille Crafting Cottage Preview Problems

Many farmers are reporting that after initially ignoring the pop-up for the Crafting Cottage Preview, they no longer have the opportunity to participate.

Whether they unintentionally ignored, were not prepared to chose their Crafting Cottage at that moment, or were eager to check out the other FarmVille Updates on Tuesday night, these farmers assumed that they could always come back and participate in the preview.

However, even after re-loading their farms, refreshing, re-logging into FaceBook, and even clearing internet cache, so far, triggering the Crafting Cottage Preview event for a second time has proved unsuccessful.

As you know taking part in the Crafting Cottage Preview awards you with a special limited edition Gnome that is specific to the Crafting Cottage (Bakery, Winery, or Spa) you chose. You may also "share" a smaller version of the Gnome with your FarmVille friends via FaceBook newsfeed.

Hopefully, with later updates this issue will be resolved and more willing farmers can participate in the Crafting Cottage Preview.

Were you able to participate in the Crafting Cottage Preview after ignoring the first notice? If so, how did you? What triggered the event for the second time?

Mafia Wars Las Vegas: New Sin City mission kicks off July 10

Mafia Wars Las Vegas is still 'coming soon,' but we're getting prepped for our mafia's arrival in Sin City with (another) teaser mission. This one kicks off Saturday, July 10, and the Vegas-themed job will include new loot, a new collection and a new achievement.

Happy Island parodies The Last Airbender as The First Windbreaker

Happy Island The Last Windbreaker or Airbender
Happy Island Fiery Shrine, Frozen Shrine, Geo Shrine, and Breezy ShrineThe last time Happy Island did a great parody items set (which is still available!) was for the TV series "Lost", which they called "Found". But while that was a cute homage, this latest poke by the game at "The Last Airbender" is worthy of guffaws.

By collecting all four elemental temples of Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire -- no Heart though, cause Captain Planet, this ain't -- you can unlock The First Windbreaker! While we can't tell what Aang... er, I mean the Windbreaker looks like, he does sport a glowy blue tattoo on top of a bald head and spins a glider staff.

The temples have been renamed as the Fiery, Frozen, Geo, and Breezy shrines. Each one costs 45 Facebook Credits ($4.50 USD), and collecting them all would set you back about $18 USD. Is "The Last Windbreaker" worth $18 USD? Hell, a better question would be if M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" was worth paying for at all (especially the retro-fitted 3D)?

As a fan of The Last Airbender TV series, I find this whole set hilarious, but then again, I've yet to see the movie, which has lots of fans feeling sensitive right now. There's very vocal outrage over Shyamalan's mishandling of the source material, on top of the pre-production casting controversy over racial under-representation. Rumor has it that Shyamalan's daughter (who's a fan of the series and the director's reason for taking on the project) had panned the film, "If I was older than my daddy, I would ground him for a very long time."

Maybe Crowdstar thought some casual Facebook fun can help lighten the mood.

Breaking News! Playdom snaps up Metaplace in ongoing shopping spree

Playdom continues its shopping spree, acquiring the San Diego-based Metaplace, which is the driving force behind three Facebook games: Island Life, My Vineyard (a.k.a. the well-heeled FarmVille) and not-officially-launched treasure hunting game, Legendary Treasure. The company was founded by Raph Koster and John Donham, who both had their hands in creating brand-name MMOs Star Wars Galaxies and Everquest 2 for Sony Online Entertainment.

The exact terms of the deal have not been disclosed, though this press release indicates that the company is particularly interested in using Metaplace's virtual world game engine to make more social games. We've contacted Playdom to see if they plan to keep Metaplace's games running or if this means goodbye to our pristine wine-making facilities in My Vineyard.

Over the past year, Playdom has been busy gobbling up smaller gaming companies which include Hive 7, Offbeat Creations, Merscom, Three Melons, Green Patch and Trippert Labs. Looks like Playdom's willing to spend big bucks to stay a top contender in the social games space.

Pet Society Mayor gets official real world debut at the Amazon store

Playfish selling Pet Society Mayor statue on Amazon
Fans of our Games.com Facebook page may remember the figurine shown above from our Fan Appreciation Giveaway back in April. Our Editor-In-Chief had just gotten her hands on two, very rare Pet Society Mayor statues, and through her great beneficence and magnanimity, two of our Games.com fans got the chance to have the Mayor for their very own!
Pet Society Mayor in the Toys and Collectable store
But now, Playfish has officially announced that they're selling the statues via Amazon. A poster of this can be found at the Pet Society "Market" store, under the "Toys and Collectable" section. Clicking on the poster will take you to this Playfish page. The Mayor is made of PVC vinyl, and is 5.25 inches tall. It costs $24.99 USD in America, which sucks, since you need at least $25 to qualify for free shipping. The UK Amazon store is offering free shipping if delivered in the UK, and the Mayor can be bought for £15.00 there.

We hope the release of the Mayor means that more real Playfish toys are headed our way soon. Because we also gave away a Pet Society pink cat figurine in April! So we know Playfish is manufacturing these things. It's all a matter of time.

Title Town Football: It ain't Madden but it's still football on Facebook

While we're still wondering when Madden football will be rushing onto Facebook, video game developer Gasworks Games (Matrix Online, Tron 2.0) beats EA Sports to the punch, announcing that its football game, Title Town Football, will arrive on Facebook in September. This will be first of several social sports games that the company is planning to release on the social network.

"Title Town Football puts fans in the front office of their own team, where they can improve facilities, sign and manage a roster of real players, and watch their franchise value skyrocket," Gasworks Games CEO and Co-Founder Andy Kaplan says.

Here are a few features that will be included Title Town Football (from the press release):

    - Bring in fans and revenue as you perform the daily duties of a football exec, from public appearances to push-ups with your star defensive end.

    - Improve Facilities: Boost your franchise value and attract premium free agents by upgrading your Stadium, Training Facility, Front Office, and more.

    - Manage Superstars: Keep an eye on your salary cap as you sign real-life players to your team roster, then decide who starts and who sits on game day.

    - Purchase Exempt Contracts: Sign heavy hitters to exempt contracts. Keep high-salary players from counting against your salary cap, and get a leg up on the competition.

    - Show Off: Force your friends to recognize the real boss when you crush them on Sundays, earn a huge fan following, and turn your run-down compound into a world-class athletic facility.

Sports games on Facebook have not proven popular so far, and we can only speculate that that's because many of these games are more of a team management simulation than an actual get-on-the-field-and-score-goals type of game. Then again, with football season's arrival immenent and ne're a Madden Facebook game in sight, that might be the opening this Title Town needs to become a gridiron great.

Vampire Wars has new Feather Wings for you to soar with in style

Vampire Wars New Wings

It's been a little while since we've seen an update to our favorite blood-sucking Facebook RPG, Vampire Wars. This time around, Zynga wants you to abandon those old, leathery Devil Wings for some shiny, new (and cheaper) Feather Wings.

Join us behind the cut for a detailed list on the three new wings and how you can have them all to yourself.

Vampire Wars Feather Wings Sets

Here are the three new sets of wings you can collect, but only after gathering 100 feathers of the corresponding set:

Peacock Wings (+20 Attack, +20 Energy)
Cardinal Wings (+20 Defense, +20 Energy)
Phoenix Wings (+10 Rage, +20 Energy)

Also, for completing all three sets of wings you'll get an additional bonus of 10 Attack, 10 Defense and 20 Energy (that's what I'm talking about!). Now, here's how to get your own collection of Feather Wings.

Gathering 100 of each type of feather can only be done through asking your friends for them and gifting them likewise. However, you can buy all 100 of each feather outright from the Elders for 100 Favor Points, but why not just exercise a little patience and do it the hard way? Besides, the Artisans are going to take a week to craft each set of wings after you give them the feathers anyway, so what's the rush?

Also, just collecting these wings will grant you the permanent stat bonuses, so if you don't like how they look (Peacock Wings... really?) fret not and leave them in your inventory.

Yahoo Fantasy Football adds Facebook sharing, "like"-ing

It looks like Sports Illustrated isn't the only company integrating Facebook functionality into its fantasy football product this season. CNet reports that Yahoo's popular fantasy football program is set to follow suit, adding some basic Facebook features into the social game.

Unlike SI's relatively full-featured Facebook fantasy game, though, Yahoo's integration is actually pretty shallow. While Yahoo users will be able to push updates about their team to their Facebook wall and "like" specific teams with the click of a button, they won't be able to control their team from their Facebook page, or find potential opponents through their Facebook network of friends. In short, this is about sharing your Yahoo Sports activity with Facebook, rather than conducting your Yahoo Sports activity through Facebook.

Even though Yahoo doesn't yet seem ready to fully merge its proprietary fantasy football program with Facebook, it obviously sees the network's potential as a way to spread the word about the game. And when even outside social games are using your network to market their own efforts, you know you're in a dominant position.

Angry Birds to add purchasable, level-skipping Mighty Eagle

Anyone who's played a social game will be familiar with the idea of paying real, honest-to-goodness money to purchase items or status that you're just not patient enough to amass on your own. Now that same concept seems to be seeping its way into popular, single-player casual game Angry Birds.

Rovio Mobile CEO Mikael Hed revealed Angry Bird's first purchasable character, the Mighty Eagle, at the Nokia World conference this week, CNet reports. The massive character allows players to bash through any pig-made structure, effectively skipping a troublesome level without any effort whatsoever. And don't worry if you feel like you'd still like to try the level out the traditional way later -- in fact, doing so will let you reuse your Eagle on a future level.

While it's still unclear how much this level skipping feature will cost, one thing is certain, according to Hed: "The key point from a business perspective is that the Mighty Eagle is declaring the end of games as a commodity and the beginning of games as a service." On other words, while Hed described the new feature as "truly a silver bullet to solve all your problems in one shot," we tend to doubt "an empty wallet" will be one of those solved problems.

Check out a cute video demonstrating the Mighty Eagle's power after the break.

Pirates Ahoy!: Help Playfish name the parrot mascot (you're so close!)

TPirates Ahoy Parrot Mascothe mysterious mascot of Pirates Ahoy! is now that much closer to being named. After asking its fans last week, Playfish has narrowed down their favorite names. Now the developer is asking its loyal fans again to take part in phase two of naming their beloved parrot by taking yet another survey.

Alright, at least it's a fun survey. Sorry, we're just bitter that "Sir Squawksalot" didn't make the cut. Here are the names that Playfish finally decided upon:

    Scurvy
    Captain Feathers
    Parry
    Polly
    Crackers
    Squawk (So close!)

While a bunch of these names are rather cliche, we'd have to go with either "Squawk" or "Parry" for originality's sake.

Social games are not social enough, Playdom Design VP says

During a recent interview with Gamasutra, Design VP of Playdom Steve Meretzky (pictured) claimed that social games have come a long way since three years ago, but social games aren't social enough. He believes that social games will only get more sophisticated as the years pass on, but not until the games' social elements are more deeply integrated.

"We've certainly gotten better at raising the production values of the games, but where we, as an industry, fall short is not moving the ball forward in terms of really making these games more social and taking advantage of the viral channels that Facebook allows," Meretzky said.

That's going to be a tough sell considering Facebook just made game discovery even more difficult for new players. Not to mention Facebook Groups could potentially fragment social gaming audiences through players communicating solely through Groups. While the platform itself presents an interesting dilemma for the growth of social games, perhaps perception poses even more of a challenge to the genre's success.

"I don't want to hear that Facebook games are Skinner boxes," he adds. "You know, when you come down to it, basically all games are Skinner boxes -- meaningless activities where you're not getting anything out of it other than enjoyment. But in traditional or more complex video games, the Skinner box core is more buried under a lot of sizzle. In Facebook games, just because they are so stripped down to their simplest, barest elements, the Skinner Box skeleton is just more visible."

While it might be deeper, more sophisticated social integration that brings social games out of the light illuminating them as meaningless task-and-reward games, there will always be dissenters. (Just look at Nintendo Wii.) In other words, haters gonna' hate.

FrontierVille Overseas Marriage Goals: Everything you need to know

Overseas Marriage dialog
If preparing your own homestead for heavy traffic wasn't already enough, Zynga has added a new series of Goals to FrontierVille called "Overseas Marriage." In these five goals, your distant aunt asks you to make some serious preparations for a relative who happens to be tying the knot across the way in the old country.

There are lots of rewards to be won and XP to gain, so join us after the break for a full guide on these new goals.
Overseas Marriage, Part 1 of 5

Just looking at the first requirement of Part I should raise a red flag: you need to have completed the original marriage goals in order to attempt these new goals. Crafting Presents requires the General Store as a work bench as well as 2 Ribbon and 5 Cloth for each present. You can get cloth naturally through doing favors for your friends, but will have to visit quite a lot of friends to both make 10 Presents and have 60 Cloth--which comes to 110 Cloth, to be exact. Completing this goal will net you 150 XP and one random General Store Collection item.
Overseas Marriage Part II
Part II requires even more Cloth to finish, so it's back to visiting your friends and doing more favors. Can you tell these goals weren't designed to be completed in a day's time? We suggest just making the Clothes in the cabin first as they'll be used in making the Fancy Clothing in the General Store. You'll also need Ribbon, so remember to ask your friends for a lot of it. One random Cabin Collection item and 200 coins is your reward for finishing this goal.
Overseas Marriage Part III
It's time to get your cook on in Part III. The best way to amass food is to through everyday activities, but visiting your friends and helping them out in tending to animals and harvesting crops will certainly speed up the process. The rest of this goal is pretty simple: just use the food and coins to make Batter in the Inn and ask your friends to gift you the 10 Lard. Finishing this goal scores you one Dinner.
Overseas Marriage Part IV
This goal is a piece of you-know-what, requiring you to just use the Batter from the last goal coupled with quite a lot of Fire, which can be made in the Wagon with 7 Wood and 5 Cloth a piece. All the while, harvest 10 Potatoes and you'll soon enough grab 500 coins and one Inn Collection item.
Overseas Marriage Part V
It looks like your distant relative is jumping the gun a bit in Part V, asking for a Bed and Baby Clothes. The Bed calls for one Furnishing and two Comforters to be crafted on the Sawmill. Here's the logical progression that will get you to your grand Feather Bed gift:

5 Planks: 7 Wood and 250 coins each in the Covered Wagon
4 Sawhorses: 5 Planks and 2 Tools each in the Barn
1 Furnishing: 4 Sawhorses and 4 Tools on the Sawmill

But that's not all! You also need two Comforters, which are made from 15 Cloth and one Downy Feather a piece in the Chicken Coop. Combining both the Furnishings and the Comforters will finally make your bed. In the meantime, remember to ask your friends for the baby Clothes. Completing this goal is to complete the mission and win two Boiled Shoes (Living on the frontier sure must have been fun...) and a whopping 500 XP.

It's been a while since we've seen a series of goals use just about every crafting building in the game, so this is a refreshing challenge. Good luck on your quest to wish your distant relatives the best wedding they've ever seen.

Happy Pets: Shy Basket returns with new Shadow Pets and Hell Mythic Dragon

The Shy Pets Basket has reappeared in Happy Pets, and this time, it's giving you the chance to win one of the following six Shadow Pets: Shadow Turtle (common), Shadow Pig (common), Shadow Dog (common), Shadow Cat (uncommon), Shadow Iguana (rare), and lastly, the Hell Mythic Dragon (Mythic).
Happy Pets Black Mythic Dragon
The Hell Mythic Dragon is very similar in appearance to the Black Mythic Dragon, but has red instead of black horns and wings. With the exception of the debut fire sale, dragons remain at 66 Facebook Credits (or $6.60 USD) each, but you've a tiny chance of netting the Hell Mythic for free if you can get seven friends to click on your Shy Pets Basket.
Happy Pets Shy Pets Basket
Another option is to pay the 298 Facebook Credits (or $29.80 USD) for an instant unlock, but be warned, even if you do that, there's no guarantee you'll end up with the dragon. Most of you are going to end up with the Shadow Turtle, Pig, or Dog.

FarmVille Halloween Basket still MIA; Farmers raise virtual pitchforks in protest

Farmers are angry and bearing their virtual pitchforks as there is still no implementation of the Halloween Candy Basket in last night's updates.

Overzealous farmers' FarmVille Gift Boxes are spilling over and its content frozen until the release of the Candy Basket collection limited event. Normally, gift box capacity is 200 items, but Zynga is allowing items over 200. The catch is that you cannot open or utilize prizes inside until the number is slimmed back down to 200.

One of the FarmVille Community managers said that we can expect to see the basket in an update made today (if all goes well).

Social City: Watch Glee promote volunteerism in 'Don't Be a Sue' to get a free City Buck

Social City Sue or Shue?
Buried in the Financial News section (look for page 'C' in a blue square) of your Social City in-game newsletter is the chance to earn a free City Buck. American Expresses' Members Project has partnered with Fox's hit musical TV show "Glee", for a commercial campaign called "Don't be a Sue!".
Social City and Glee with 'Don't Be a Sue'
Coach Sue Sylvester is the show's chief villianess, and whose actress, Jane Lynch, admits is "pure evil and doesn't hide it." In the commercial, you can hear Sue say delightfully evil things such as, "Why should children be burdened by the tyranny of reading? Words are hard!" After viewing the commercial, you should click on "Enter Sweepstakes" in order to collect your free 1 City Buck. But if you really want to apply for the chance to hang out with the Glee cast in Los Angeles, you'll have to follow the rest of the instructions they give you to enter the sweepstakes for real.

Mafia Wars inventory revamp coming soon - Help shape these new changes

Just a few minutes ago, Zynga announced that they will soon be undertaking a set of "initiatives" in Mafia Wars, that will apparently improve the game. One of these changes will include an Inventory revamp. This seems like one of the best things they could bring to Mafia Wars (that being a more organized inventory system), as it has become pretty hard to find particular items in the dozens and dozens of items any one person may own (especially higher level players).

However, instead of just announcing a revamp and being done with it, Zynga wants your input on how the new inventory should be designed. They're asking players a series of questions over on the game's official forums ("How do you use your inventory?" "What would you like to use it for?" and so on), and they've also posted a few mock-ups (that is, work-in-progress images that could change at any time) of what the new inventory system could potentially look like when it launches. You can see one of the images at the top of this post.

This new system could contain not only ways to view only specific kinds of items, like weapons or vehicles, but it may also color-code those items to show how rare a particular item in your inventory is, along with potentially allowing us to sort our items by city location from which they were found or purchased.

As if that weren't enough, it looks as though Zynga is working on forming a wiki of sorts about each and every item in your inventory. If this all works out according to the current setup, you'll be able to click on an item, and learn virtually everything you could ever want to know about an item, including (but not limited to) its cost in the store, its attack and defense points, its added abilities and features, and even a detailed item description.

If you ask us, this sounds like an absolutely fantastic set of new additions that we'd just love to see added to the game. However, as we said, this is far from a concrete announcement, so if you have any concerns or added suggestions that you think Zynga should know about, they would love to hear them - simply head over to the game's forums and post your thoughts there.

Discovery/Hive offers pre-registration bonus for Deadliest Catch Facebook game

Back in September, we told you about the announcement of a future Deadliest Catch game on Facebook, being developed by Hive Media. Now that the game is about to launch (it is slated for release sometime this month), Discovery and Hive Media are offering fans of the television show a way to earn a pre-registration bonus, that will be redeemable when the game launches. These bonuses will help those potential fisherman earn a leg (or fin) up on the competition, and they're completely free to earn.

All you have to do is head over to the official Discovery Channel blog and fill out a quick form. As a reward, you'll receive an email when Deadliest Catch: The Social Game launches, with said emailing containing instructions on how to claim $50,000 of in-game currency, and 20 Crab Coins (we're assuming that's the premium currency), absolutely free.

In addition, Discovery has also launched new details concerning the game itself. We now know that the title will have a concept "similar" to FarmVille, but instead of becoming a farmer on the land, you'll become a crab-fishing captain. You'll be able to customize your avatar, choose (and apparently customize) your ship, hire a crew, stack pots, and then hit the waters of the Bering Sea.

For your chance at these free bonuses, and to see a few more screenshots from this up-and-coming title, check out the Discovery Channel blog.

Zynga launches Cafe World Special Delivery daily email system

Similar to the systems found in FrontierVille, FarmVille, and now even Treasure Isle, Cafe World has been given its own Daily Special Delivery email system, granting players that sign up (an in-game pop-up allows you to sign up for the service) the ability to earn one free Special Delivery box in an email sent to their Facebook email (the one that you gave Zynga to continue playing, when emails became mandatory some months ago).

As we told you last month, the Special Delivery box in Cafe World offers you one free item, and is normally something that you actually need to finish a task in the game, whether that task be building a lightning stove, finishing the drink bar, and so on. You can also earn free servings of dishes through these boxes, so think of them what you will.

Either way, these emails will show up in your inbox daily, with the link inside only staying active for 24 hours. Simply make sure that you're logged into Facebook when you click on the email link, and you'll be taken to Facebook where your delivery box will be opened automatically, and you'll see what's inside. Even if it is a bundle of food servings, it was free, and we really can't complain about that.

New FrontierVille mission: It's Chicken Roundup Time!

A new limited time quest has launched in FrontierVille today, called "It's Chicken Roundup Time!" Like the other limited time missions, you'll have to accept this mission by a certain date, in this case November 21, and finish the quest within 3 days of accepting it.

In this case, the mission asks you to Sell 50 Adult Chickens, Collect 12 Shipping Labels, and Collect Ten Pairs of Hip Boots. Hopefully you've saved some of the chickens you've had to purchase for other missions, or even those given away by friends when they clobber foxes on their own Homesteads, as you'll need a lot of them for this quest.

Additionally, depending on how far you or your neighbors are into the Aunt's List quest line, you may already have the 12 Shipping Labels in your inventory, ready to use. Either way, as these Hip Boots are a new item, you'll need to post a news item to your wall so that your friends will be able to send them to you. Luckily, you've got a full three days to collect the boots that you need, so the rush is lessened this time around (as opposed to, say, the Canning Jars in a previous timed mission).

As a reward for finishing the quest, you'll receive the Rabbit Rotisserie decorative item. Will your farmers be eating rabbit for Thanksgiving this year as opposed to turkey? Only time will tell, but we'll be sure to let you know when/if more of these kinds of missions become available to complete in the game.

FrontierVille 'Holiday Decoratin' and 'Holiday Celebratin' Missions: Everything you need to know

Holiday Decoratin'
Everyone knows that decorations are more important on Christmas, Hanukkah and the other winter holidays than any other special day of the year. Just look at Clark Griswold--now there is a guy that gets it. It only makes sense that our friends in FrontierVille would feel the same way. Except without all the fake drum rolls and disappointment. Here are the two missions you can find in the Special section of the Market:

1. Holiday Decoratin':
-Craft 15 Presents
-Collect Two Pink Flowers
-Collect 10 Holly Wreaths

For this mission, you'll need to visit your friends often and harvest lots of Cotton to amass enough Ribbon and Cloth to craft 15 Presents. The two Pink Flowers come from the Wildflower Collection, which can be completed by clearing Wildflowers much like grass and rocks--just remember not to turn in the Collection before completing the mission. All the while, keep berating those friends for some wreaths, but try to return the favor because there's always one wreath in it for you.

Holiday Celebratin'2. Holiday Celebratin':
-Collect Three Cow's Milk
-Collect Three Goose Eggs
-Craft 20 Fireworks

Time to unleash the eggnog, but where's the rum? You'll have to tend to quite a lot of Cows and Geese to get three of each of those items. And remember: do not turn in the Collections before completing this mission or you will be that much further behind and a very sad pioneer. Crafting the Fireworks takes Saltpeter, which only drops from the Manure Collection. Thankfully, each Saltpeter used in Cabin makes for five Fireworks, but this is still going to be a long mission. Completing this Goal will reward you with a Big Present that will contain one of four rare decorations.

These missions are part of the three Gift Mission packs, so they can be repeated indefinitely until they predictably go away after Christmas is through. So, decorate and celebrate to your heart's content, just remember to keep on visiting for that Cloth and Energy.

FarmVille Unwither Ring: The one ring to infuriate them all returns

Unwither Ring
Zales? Forget them. Kay Jewelers? Kid stuff. Tiffany's? You could find that stuff in a quarter machine. What's really wowing the girls this season is the Unwither Ring. Zynga's infamous, expertly cut and set ring in FarmVille has returned for the holidays. Not only will this ring absolutely take your loved one's breath away, but their crops will never dry out and die again. OK, so all that stuff is made up, but it will keep your crops from withering for eternity. The Unwither Ring has been the target of much debate in the FarmVille world this year with claims that it either costs too much, trivializes the game or shouldn't exist altogether. For another look at "game-breaking" items in social games, check out this post.

For a whopping 250 Farm Cash, you can gift this item to a friend and even customize it with two band options--gold and platinum--and five gem choices: Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Black Pearl and None for the plain folk. Lastly, you can engrave it with a cute, 140 character message. Now, I would strongly recommend not getting your girlfriend, wife or what have you this if she is not seriously into FarmVille or you could very well be alone this Christmas. But if that's your (and her) thing, then definitely take the nearly $40 plunge. Just make sure you get her something tangible, too. You know she deserves it for dealing with your sorry behind day in and day out.

Pet Society WWF Christmas Carolers bring holiday tunes and a good cause

WWF Christmas Carolers
Just like that, the carolers are already out at night, singing the joys of the holiday season that's upon us. (Can you tell that I love Christmas?) In Pet Society, replace those carolers with terribly cute, endangered species and you got yourself an adorable gift set with a cause. The Word Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Playfish have joined forces once to bring us the cutest digital animals with a chance to donate to help save endangered animals everywhere. Here is the foursome you can find in the Boutique:

Penguin on Piano: 12 Playfish Cash
Baby Polar Bear on Vocals: 11 Playfish Cash
Baby Penguin on Backup Vocals: 11 Playfish Cash
Polar Bear on Cello: 12 Playfish Cash

With their adorable faces, strangely opposable thumbs and musical talents combined, this quartet will bring real Christmas tunes to your home. In other words, you need to buy all four for their music to play. Most importantly, however is that for each purchase of these animals or the 40 Playfish Cash box set, Playfish will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to the WWF. Keep in mind that 10 percent isn't necessarily a lot from either about $8 for the set or $2.50 individually, but there is strength in numbers. Especially in four absolutely charming critters who are already more talented than most of us.

FrontierVille Gingerbread House Goals: Everything you need to know

Gingerbread House WhackingYou pioneers are never satisfied, are you? First, it's the Buildable Snowman. Then Zynga gives you 12 days of Christmas Goals. And now, because that clearly wasn't enough, it threw in one of the most elaborate cross promotions you've ever seen this side of Rattlesnake Canyon: The Gingerbread House. Man, you FrontierVille players are just plain spoiled.

It seems that this adorable little gingerbread man is having trouble building his home this Christmas season as everywhere he's gone, people have literally eaten him out of house and home. In order to help, you'll need to go back to the three locales he's tried to build at and retrieve the essential ingredients to his home: CityVille, Treasure Isle and Mafia Wars. After placing his house on the homestead and giving it a few good whacks (that cost Food this time rather than Wood, get it?), you'll be greeted by this Building's menu. (If you're having trouble finding him, he's hanging out with the Carolers near the Toy Factory.)

Find out how to complete this Goal spanning several Zynga games after the break.
Finish your Gingerbread House
We'll get the easy--well, easier--stuff out of the way first. In addition to traveling to three different game worlds, you will need 15 Pretzels, 10 Gingerbread Slabs and 10 Frosting Tubes. All three of these items are acquired the old fashioned way: begging, of course. So, keep up on tapping your friends for these Gifts while you gallivant about three games.

Paul's Improvements
Let's start with finding a Chocolate Bar in CityVille. Clicking on the "Earn for Free" button will take you to a confirmation screen that will then launch you into your own city. From there, click on the Horseshoe icon to get started with "Paul's Improvements." Here, you'll need to do three simple tasks: place two Asphalt Roads, collect from five Residences and place three Decorations (yawn). Find the Asphalt Roads in the Decorations tab of the Build menu for 10 coins a pop. Also in that same tab will be where you can find three Decorations, so pick any three and put them any old place. Then, just click on five Residences with the coin icon hovering above them. If you're trying to save money or don't have any room for this nonsense, just delete it when your done using the Remove tool. For doing this, you'll receive 50 coins.

For some reason, completing the Goal won't return you to FrontierVille automatically nor did it instantly reward me with the Chocolate Bar. Only after jumping back into FrontierVille and following the same link that go me into CityVille from the game in the first place made Paul reappear, allowing me to jump back into FrontierVille to claim my Chocolate Bar. Next, let's take a stroll down the shady streets of Mafia Wars to get the next item, the Candy Cane.

Mafia Wars Candy Cane
Following the same process again, but for Mafia Wars, will take you where you need to be for the Candy Cane. For new or low level Mafia Wars players, this is going to be cake. For the veterans out there, have fun, OK? All you need to do in Mafia Wars to get the Candy Cane is gain one level above Level 5 through Jobs, which won't be so easy for the Level 100-plus players out there. Once you level up, you should receive a similar message to that from CityVille, prompting you to return to FrontierVille and open up your Candy Cane. Next, let's dive into Treasure Isle for the final item, the Gum Drops.

Treasure Isle Gum Drops
This Goal should be even easier than the last for most. For players above Level 4 (it's a requirement), all you need to do is find five Treasures... anywhere. So, you could probably just go about your business and work on whatever it is your currently tackling. Then, you should receive a similar confirmation as before, transporting you back to the homestead with Gum Drops in hand. If this doesn't happen automatically--this goes for Mafia Wars too--try the trick mentioned above. It worked in CityVille, so it might work the same way here. Now that you know what to do, go forth and conquer the worlds of what might soon be the misfit Zynga games, cowering in the shadow of the mighty CityVille empire.

Mafia Wars 'No Crime Like the Present': Everything you need to know

If you took a look at your Operations today in Mafia Wars, you might have noticed a massive Christmas Tree plopped where your normal group missions should be. Do not be alarmed, this is Zynga's new, elaborate holiday event to ring in Christmas mobster-style, "No Crime Like the Present." In this special, limited time event, players will have to get into the holiday spirit like any self-respecting mafia member would: hoarding and stealing, of course. Mixing a little bit of gifting, stealing and protection, this event is going to take plenty dedication and team work if you want to nab the grand prize weapon: Auld Lang Syne (110 Attack, 135 Defense).

Peek behind the break to get a detailed look at how this huge holiday event works.
Holiday Gifting
Before you do much of anything involving Presents, we recommend getting your tree to the max level as soon as possible for it to hold the maximum amount of Presents: 45. (This becomes vitally important later, trust us.) To make your tree shine brilliantly at Level 5, you will need to collect large amounts of each Decoration: Ornaments, Lights and Candy Canes:

Level 2: Three of each Decoration (increases capacity to nine)
Level 3: Four of each Decoration (increases capacity to 18)
Level 4: Six of each Decoration (increases capacity to 30)
Level 5: Eight of each Decoration (increases capacity to 45)

That's a total of 21 for each Decoration, which adds up to a grand total of 63 gifted items.Thankfully, you can send these Decorations to your mafia members through the Free Gifts page as well as request them, making the task slightly less tedious. However, what you can send from that page is a Holiday Sack, which may contain one of seven items: any one of the three Decorations, any one of the three Presents or a Lump of Coal. If the person you're sending the Holiday Sack too has already maxed out their Christmas Tree, then that narrows down the possibilities to one of three Presents or the Lump of Coal (a weapon with one Attack and one Defense). After you've decked out the tree with blinding holiday bling, it's time to pilfer those Presents.

Rewards List
This is done exactly how decorating the tree was, but you can send Presents directly from the Christmas Tree menu. When sending or receiving a Gift, you have a random chance at getting or giving either a Blue, Red or Green Gift. This directly effects your chances at winning the 11 available items, most of which have impressive stats, thankfully. While there are five common items that can be found inside any of the three varieties of Presents with lesser stats, there are six items that can only be inside one of the three Presents with numbers that match some Italy-grade items. Here's where you can find the rarer holiday items:

Blue Gift: Shadow Transporter (77 Attack, 60 Defense); Bengal Tiger (72 Attack, 99 Defense)
Green Gift: Mobile Garage (55 Attack, 79 Defense); 40mm Bunker Buster (101 Attack, 68 Defense)
Red Gift: Achilles Salvation (69 Attack, 100 Defense); ET Hybrid (63 Attack, 75 Defense)

However, we don't recommend opening these Presents before New Year's Day. If you can't wait long enough and have the maximum amount of Presents come Jan. 1, you'll receive the grand prize. Unfortunately, that won't be so easy considering anyone can steal Presents from any Christmas Tree. Luckily for you, six friends can be enlisted to protect your Presents with their statistics contributing yours. So, make sure you recruit only your most powerful friends to keep your tree safe.

Tree Robbery
If you want to steal your own Presents, Christmas Trees will randomly appear on the Robbery Page with varying difficulty based on the mobsters protecting it, but you'll always need at least five mafia members and six Stamina to rob one. Also, Zynga added a News Feed to this Operation's home page so you can track who did what to your Presents and retaliate accordingly. With the threat of your precious Presents being stolen, we know where you're going to be this Christmas.

FrontierVille 12 Days of Christmas Goals: Everything you need to know for Day Nine

On the Ninth Day O' Christmas
By now, you're probably overwhelmed with holiday-themed things to do in FrontierVille, but you must press on. And we're here to help. Today, Zynga unlocked "On the Ninth Day O' Christmas" in the 12 Days of Christmas series of Goals. Once again, seasoned players will have little to no trouble with this Goal (although it can quickly become time consuming), but players who are relatively new to the game have quite a lot of work do.

First things first, you're going to need a completed Schoolhouse to complete this task, so why don't you new players check out this detailed guide (courtesy of FrontierVille Wiki) on how to complete it and come on back when you're ready? Once that's through, you'll need to collect the Daily Bonus from the Schoolhouse twice. So, this Goal is obviously going to take at least two days--just take your time. Next, you have to find a Lunchbox. Conveniently enough, they happen to be part of the Schoolhouse Collection, so you might come across one while collecting those two Daily Bonuses, but it is random. All the while, you will need to ask your friends for 10 Book Reports, which will be used up in the Goal. Fulfill all three requirements and this Goal will be in the bag faster than that torn-up wrapping paper Christmas morning with 90 XP and 900 coins waiting for you.

FrontierVille Gingerbread Man Goals: Everything you need to know

Check out the rest of our Holiday 2010 coverage right here.

If you thought you were done with the scrumptious-looking Gingerbread House in FrontierVille, think again. As it turns out, the Gingerbread Man's stay on the homestead is part of a series of three Goals starting with "Building the Gingerbread Man a Home." And if you followed our guide on how to build it, you've already got the hardest part of this Goal out of the way.

As for the other two requirements, you've been asked to plant five Fruit Trees. This means that you can plant five fruit-bearing trees of any kind to fulfill this portion of the Goal. So, if you're living on the cheap, just go with five Cherry Trees. That will only cost you a total of 3,100 coins and will be ready harvest in the least amount of time, which leads us to the final requirement. All you need to do is harvest or water 20 fruit trees on your homestead. If you don't have 20 trees already, this will take some extra cash and time, but for those with bigger homesteads this should be easy pickings. Enjoy the 150 XP, 250 coins and Light Snack as a reward for your hard work.

Find out how to best complete Part II and III of the Gingerbread Man Goals after the break.

Eaten Gingerbread HousePart II of the Gingerbread Man Goals requires the unthinkable (and, if the forums are any indication, annoying): you must eat the Gingerbread House. I guess your pioneer, after witnessing its sweet, cavity-inducing glory, decided that they just could not resist. Well, that's my suspension of disbelief, anyway. And to go with that delicious Gingerbread House, you'll need two Milk from the Cow Collection and 15 Cloth (napkins... get it?). As always, Cloth comes from visiting friends, but if you don't have any Milk saved you'll have to try your luck at finding it at random from tending Cows. Once this is completed, 200 XP, 500 coins and 75 Food await you.

Brace yourselves, Part III is somewhat of a doozie. You're going to have to rebuild that Gingerbread House you just gorged. Let that sink in a little bit before we move on. You're good? Great. Now, this means that you'll need to do the same three cross-game Goals again and ask for the same three items from friends, according to several forum members whose posts have since been removed. But that's not all. In addition to rebuilding the little guy's crib, you will also have to harvest any crop 150 times and harvest 50 of your friends' fruit trees. While you don't have to harvest the same 150 crops, you're probably better off just picking one crop and sticking to it like the Clovers or Tomatoes, the cheapest, fastest crops in the game. Either way, this Goal is going to be time consuming for most, to say the least. You're reward for getting there and back again will be 450 XP, 2,500 coins and a Mini Gingerbread House. Now that you know what to do, go on and make that Gingerbread Man one happy cookie.

Civilization World for Facebook reveals a crazy complex city [Video]

CivWorld Combat
You wanted complexity in your Facebook games, right? Firaxis Games plans to deliver enough of it to keep you interested for, well, ever in Civilization World. (And probably more than we could handle.) In Episode 2 of CivWorld's Gameplay Walkthrough, Pete Murray shows the nitty gritty of each of the game's primary resources: Food, Gold, Science, Culture and Production. And Sid Meier's social rendition of his hit strategy game looks to be deeper and more daunting than ever.

In CivWorld, you can change your workers' tasks at any time to fill gaps in any particular resource. Have some Farmers producing Food, but you need more culture progression? Then just switch them over and they'll start gathering the Culture resource. Scientific progression can be automated using the Job system, but can be micromanaged as well. The most exciting aspect of city progression in CivWorld, however, is the mini games.

For each resource, there is a mini game that you can play for extra boosts to that stat. For more science points and faster progression, you can work on a vast, sprawling maze mini game. To increase your Culture, you must collaborate with your friends to complete artifacts and acquire Great People before the opposition does, which can be sped along through a picture-swap game.

Most intriguing of all is the first footage of the combat system we recently heard about, which amounts to a card battle game that uses your Civilization's collective units. So, it pays to--you guessed it--collaborate. If anything, CivWorld is looking to be a seriously deep game, and we can't wait to dive in.

Plants vs. Zombies, unite! PopCap's charity auction enters Week 2

While most sites right now are abuzz with the rumored auctioning of PopCap Games to Electronic Arts ("Auction item number one: PopCap ... the whole thing! Bidding starts at ... $1 billion!"), there's a smaller, equally important one started by PopCap itself.

To recap on PopCap, for every week until July 12th, the company will put a bunch of official, one-of-a-kind games merchandise up on eBay to bidders. All proceeds (the first week's raised $1,700 USD) will benefit the Starlight Children's Foundation in America and SpecialEffect in the United Kingdom.

Since Bejeweled, Plants vs. Zombies is the most well-known and beloved of PopCap's games, so it's great that we're seeing a lot of PvZ merchandise this week.

Following the ceramic Peggle sake set, you can now serve up some delicious breakfast (or braaaaains) with a Plants vs. Zombies ceramic mug and bowl set! Fend off the undead hordes with an official Peashooter costume that was used in the NYC Greenwich Halloween parade! Or get a box diorama of a PvZ Final Wave to display in your home.
Plants vs. Zombies ceramic mug bowl set
This week's auction closes June 28th with more goods on the way. (I'm excited to see what the Zuma-themed ceramic tea set will look like!) Keep up with the releases here: www.ebay.com/popcap.

Marc Ecko's Weeds Facebook game (puffs then) passes this month

Marc Ecko has rolled up a new joint on Facebook--figuratively, of course. Weeds, the hit show on Showtime revolving around a pot-dealing suburban soccer mom, will have its very own marijuana-making Facebook game this month.

Ecko's game studio, Ecko Code, built the game in association with Lionsgate Films to coincide with the show's season premiere June 27. And you can probably already guess what you'll be up to in Weeds Social Club (its official title).

Admittedly, much of the game sounds like the Canadian Facebook ganja-grower Pot Farm. Players will have to grow and create their own strains of marijuana, and tend to the "crops" much like they would in the far more innocent FarmVille.

As you level up in the game, you will unlock advanced strains of the potent plant to sell above or below street value. With the cash, players can deck out their houses with tons of digital goodies, and buy even more with Favors, the game's paid currency.
Weeds Social Club
The game's not all about growing the fire grass, at least. Andy Botwin from the show is featured in the game, and he's been blessed with the voice and wit of Justin Kirk (who plays Andy in Weeds) to give you tips as you progress. More importantly, Weeds Social Club will follow the plot of the show closely, and perhaps even try out new, alternative plot lines.

This social tie-in is decidedly more mature than most, and Marc Ecko frankly doesn't care. "There has been this philosophy of don't offend anyone, be very broad-this Hallmark card philosophy," Marc Ecko told Business Week. "We believe there is a user out there that wants something with more teeth and more counter culture." Well, you can't get more "counter culture" than this--unless, of course, someone went and made a Breaking Bad Facebook game.

PC shooter Team Fortress 2 is now free, Valve's new favorite word

If you've never played Team Fortress 2--or any PC shooter, for that matter--there won't be a better time than right now. Valve, developer of critically-acclaimed franchises like Half-Life and operator of the Steam network, has made its team-based first-person shooter (FPS) free. And that's forever.

Team Fortress 2, released over Steam in 2007, tasks players to work as a team across several game modes like Capture the Flag and King of the Hill. You can choose between a bunch of different player classes such as the Sniper, the Scout, the Heavy and more.

The game will be supported by micro-transactions--just like your favorite social games. (And just like it has long before it went free-to-play.) There will be no subscriptions nor will there be advertisements. And in an interview with Develop, Valve's Robin Walker said, "Now that we're shipping it, it feels like a fairly straightforward next step along the 'Games as Services' path we've been walking down for a while now." In other words, we can likely expect way more where this came from.

TF2 logo
The developer slash digital games store owner has been on a free frenzy lately. Just last week, five free-to-play games were made available on the Steam platform including Spiral Knights, a social game-like dungeon crawler for four. (It looks like another developer is feeling the heat from the social/mobile games markets.) This could be the mysterious project Valve recently alluded to, or more freebies are just around the bend. A man can dream, no?

Zynga goes bananas for Astro Ape, potential buyout in action [Rumor]

Can we finally give Zynga an ominous title ... like the Ape Assimilator? (It just rolls off the tongue.) Business Insider reports that Zynga, most recently creator of Pioneer Trail, has purchased self-proclaimed mobile social game competitor Astro Ape, most recently known for Monsterz Revenge for iPhone. And no "anonymous sources" even needed to be cited--just look at Linkedin.

Astro Ape CEO Chieh Huang, along with a number of his colleagues, have changed their profile information to positions within Zynga NY, one of the global companies few east coast studios. Specifically, Business Insider cites Astro Ape's director of engineering, who has taken the exact same title within Zynga's New York office.

So, the website deduces that Zynga has more than likely acquired Astro Ape. And what an interesting turn of events. Just recently, Huang called out Zynga, claiming that his studio was better than the omnipresent Facebook games creator.

"It sounds like a basic concept, but I think it's getting lost a bit today in social gaming. Our users come into our apps because they want to play our games, not because we spam them with invites, requests and other offers," Huang said months ago, indirectly referring to Zynga.

Monsterz Revenge
Has Astro Ape bended its stance in the name of the mighty dollar, or does it plan to bring a new breed of mobile game to Zynga? Who knows, but if this turns out to be true, Zynga just employed a brilliant strategy, sway the naysayers.

Zynga slapped with yet another patent infringement suit over its games

Zynga is officially the proverbial guy who wins the lottery and suddenly "reunites" with hundreds of long-lost friends. Only those old friends are angry, money-hungry companies and the "reunions" have been swapped for nasty lawsuits. Zynga faces yet another patent infringement lawsuit, this time from Agincourt Gaming, seemingly the publisher of Pantheon, a greco-roman combat game on Facebook (pictured below).

Sun Herald reports that, according to allegations made by Agincourt Gaming, Zynga has violated two patents held by the company regarding credits-based online gaming since 1996. (You know, the model used by every Facebook game ever?) The company, who just recently entered the Facebook games biz, seeks monetary damages and a permanent injunction against Zynga that shut down several of its games.

More specifically, Agincourt Gaming named FarmVille, FishVille, PetVille, YoVille, Zynga Poker, Empires & Allies, Mafia Wars, Treasure Isle, FrontierVille, CityVille, Cafe World and Vampire Wars. In other words, all of Zynga's games (that matter) have been put under fire. According to Sun Herald the lawsuit also alleges that Zynga has a history of copying smaller developers' game ideas.

Pantheon on Facebook
Zynga knows the issue rather intimately, considering the company has been smacked with multiple infringement lawsuits over the past few months. Companies like Vostu, SocialApps and even The Learning Company have approached Zynga, which is said to be worth over $11.5 billion. Clearly this has become a growing trend for the global developer, but when or if Zynga will finally bite the bullet and respond to these claims is what we're all really waiting for.

Dustbin Bieber will see double in Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo for DS

And so will the little ones, we'd imagine. Mind Candy, creator of the hyper popular social game franchise Moshi Monsters, has announced Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo for the Nintendo DS. With the help of global publisher Activision, Mind Candy looks to put the adorable little creatures right in every kid's pocket this fall. (Because, seriously, what kid doesn't own a DS by now?)

The game sounds like it will expand upon the existing Moshi Monsters hook: Moshlings are pets that players collect for their pet monsters. Pet monsters with pets of their own--this is a little too meta for my taste already.

According to a release, the game will feature 52 Moshlings to collect including a brand new one that has yet tot be announced. The game will also feature new mini games that are, of course, educational, as well as trophies for players to collect.

Gallery: Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo

This is just one of the many ways Moshi Monsters will and has occupied the time of over 50 million kids worldwide since 2008 like the Moshi Monsters toys, books, trading cards and even a magazine. Being able to interact with your Moshi Monsters in new ways and in new places sounds cool and all, but we just hope Mind Candy cures our Dustbin Bieber fever while on the go. Something tells us we're not the only ones. Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo, is due out globally this fall.

Yar's Rutabaga Revenge: Atari's 'core focus' now on social, mobile games

Looks like Yar might exact his revenge on your farm next. Atari has announced three additions to its high-level staff, but more importantly, a big clue as to where the ancient company is headed next. According to a release, Atari will shift its "core focus to casual gaming experiences designed for mobile, social networks and emerging platforms."

The bolstering of the company's senior management with three new hires brings in collective experience from EA, Vivendi Games, King.com, Sprint and more. The lucky (lady and) gentlemen are Robert Mattes as CFO, Owais Farooqui as Senior VP of Digital Publishing, and Maria Pacheco as VP of Mobile.

Some might have seen this one coming, considering it will have released three Facebook games in less than a year once Dungeons & Dragons hits Facebook, but this the proverbial mission statement for the company going forward. Since December of last year, the company has released two Facebook games: Asteroids Online and most recently Fairies vs Darklings, neither of which have been particularly successful, according to AppData.

Alas, the company will press on into social games in search of its flagship Facebook game. Thankfully, it has a few ginormous properties up its sleeve like Missile Command, Centipede, Pong and Breakout. And with Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of Neverwinter (pictured) headed to Facebook this fall, the company just might have a shot. Just look, those are some of the most well-known names in gaming. Come on, just try and tell me you wouldn't play (a legit version of) Pong on your iPhone.

Ultima's Richard Garriott: Social, mobile games are the 'future of games'

We knew it was for more than the buck all along. For big league game designers and (literal) space cadets, apparently, like Richard Garriott, their leap into social games is about more than money: It's the future, Marty! During the final keynote speech of GDC Europe, the creator of Ultima commonly known as Lord British said, "I'm a devout believer that this is the current and near-term future of games." What's "this," you ask?

Social and mobile games, and Garriott is certainly not alone in his new found faith. The founder of social games studio (and technology) Portalarium has been joined by veterans like Doom co-creator John Romero and Civilization maker Sid Meier. Even Sim City creator Will Wright is said to be digging Facebook games right now. (Though, there is certainly a ton of cashola to be made in this biz.)

However, Garriott has some specific ideas for how social games will continue to operate, according to Gamasutra. Namely, he seems to think that asynchronicity is here to stay. This means that how friends interact independently of one another a' la FarmVille will be the mode for Facebook and mobile games going forward. Of course, the burgeoning freemium model will also become a norm in mobile games as it has social games, according to Garriott, who is currently working on bringing his flagship character, Lord British, to social networks in a big way.

His answer to the naysayers still sitting in the Xbox and PlayStation camps? Just you watch, these things are evolving fast. Garriott reiterated on his points made earlier in the year that Facebook gamers are already more sophisticated at navigating video games than we've assumed, and they'll be ready when the technology catches up.

"My main message to the development community is don't get left behind," Garriott said. Don't worry, milord, I reckon the dollar signs alone will eventually attract almost everyone.
